It's no rumor, my wife manages a GameStop. Their store had 48 ps4 slots available initially and only 12 Xbox Ones.
It's like that all over and they aren't even releasing the Xbox in as many territories.
You'll have your proof when these things release, both likely to be sold out at launch and the PS4 will have a significant lead.
Oh, and the One isn't available in store any more again, they called it back off today.

I'd say 6-7 years would be about right. Long enough to get a bunch of systems out the door, not so long we get burnt out.
I do hope that the improved speed at which titles can be produced on these new systems will lead to more variety, that might allow for a longer time between consoles.

To be fair, I don't think he was addressing the PC in the comparison he was making.
PC gamers should be thankful that every 5-8 years a standardized platform(s) is released that sells 10s of millions of units. This allows developers to push the boundaries of those consoles and raises the minimum accepted performance level of current pcs. Can you imagine how far behind we might be lagging in performance if consoles didn't exist?
Hope it's as fun as Just Cause 2 but with a more living world. JC2 felt oddly empty at times, plenty of vehicles, but the world felt oddly lifeless.
