@ Cyguration - you could also get a PS3 or a gaming PC ;). Ouya looks interesting, but its specs are too low for its games to be cutting edge. Will be great for indie stuff, but most indies will try and release on PC as well (and stuff that'll run on Ouya should run on most PCs, not just ones built mainly for gaming).
I wish them luck of course, and if they've got a business model that's designed around being a niche product then they'll be fine (gaming flig...
You do, but you miss out on PSU, DCUO, Free Realms and MAG - a little research beyond your immediate experience may have helped some - an Xbox 360 only gamer by any chance perhaps? ;).
Have always been impressed with the portfolio of games on Sony's systems - they've been my favourite gaming system three generations in a row (with PC coming in second, and then Ninty and Xbox taking turns in third). The push to go even broader, and things like that touchpad, could make it even better :).
Well said, but keep in mind that consoles also benefit from the hardcore PC crowd, that pay for a lot of the development that then goes into console hardware. It's a virtuous circle, as the console hardware then takes those improvements to a wider audience, which provides the install base necessary to support the development of games like the Assassin's Creed and numerous other AAA franchises.
Whether they're expensive or not depends a bit on what they're compared with. Good article and a decent read for some quality perspective, but would have been good to see a mention of the hardware subsidy that tends to happen at the start of console generations.
Well said, a lot of hardcore PC gamers forget that the install base for high-end PCs is tiny compared with the install base for consoles (just give the Steam hardware survey a gander if you don't believe me, high-end PCers) - 'PC' gaming is gaming with a mid-to-low range card far more than it is with a GTX 690 - it's just you'll only see the high-end guys on the forums.
The one thing that a lot of PC-only gamers seem to forget, is that it takes a bit of research, effort and time to build a PC. For gamers with a job, family and responsibilities, time (or interest) isn't necessarily there. Comparing the price of a prefabricated unit to a collection of parts that need to be assembled makes as much sense here as it does in any other industry (ie, none).
That, and the other big issue with PCs is the general work that's required to get t...
There will absolutely be PCs that will best the PS4 (there are PCs now that do), but it'll take more than a GTX 560 ;).
Lots of issues being discussed here, but the whole '90% of games' thing may or may not be the case, if MS doesn't follow Sony's approach of opening up to Indies and relaxing publishing requirements. If they don't follow this lead, then the difference in catalogues (outside of the back-catalogue of exclusives, which in the case of the Playstation brand is not negligible) will likely be more substantial than that.
Plus, don't write off the touch-pad in ...
Decent poll, but a shame they didn't have a placeholder 'Next Xbox' or similar thrown in there - sure it hasn't been announced, but people will be thinking about it in the context of their purchasing decisions. Good to see quality interest in the PS4 - think it's well-placed from what we've seen so far.
@ CommonSense/Neoandrew - there are console games that do 1080p/60fps now - they're just downloadables that aren't as taxing on resources. You can play Minecraft in 1080p and 60fps, and wouldn't need cutting-edge hardware to do it - there's an awful lot more to visuals than the display resolution and the refresh rate.
Of course - 720p (or lower) and 30fps (or therabouts) is clearly what we've had on console mostly this gen (and what I had on PC - most PC&...
It's missing a few games - it's 'Games to Watch' - not all of them, and it's more focussed on traditional, 'core' games - Wonderbook looks excellent, but it's outside the scope for this article.
Paradox are awesome - would be great to see some classic Paradox-style games like EU making it to console (with the touchpad on the PS4 controller, and the Wii U gamepad, and Smartglass on XboxNext it could well be a possibility as well).
Aye - competition is good, the last thing I want is a lame-duck Microsoft going the Wii angle. Signs at this stage could point either way, though.
@ xxLucky - it's getting pretty late in the day to copy anything - we're seven-to-eight months from launch, far too late to meaningfully change hardware specs (without pushing the launch back into 2014) - and Sony would look right odd changing them just after detailing what those hardware specs are. It's very odd that MS has basically conceded the first half of the year, media-wise, to the PS4 - they want to be getting their ideas and the like out there (both to the public and de...
Very well said CaulkSlap - the PS4 will (like every console before it) easily perform greater than its specs when compared with PCs, _and_ the step up in console hardware will make it worthwhile for devs to create features that will take advantage of current PC hardware (as, like it or lump it, there aren't enough PC gamers with high-end rigs to justify AAA development for them alone). Everyone wins, and everyone gets to go home smiling :). As a PC and console gamer myself, the PS4 soun...
Not sure about this claim - the PS2 could play PSOne games - that makes for a launch library almost twice the size of Ouya ;). Launch PS3 could play most PS2 and PSOne...
I've got a PC, 360 and PS3, and had a Wii, and for someone that likes more than just arcade shooters, the PS3 was my go-to console, and when I wasn't in the mood for strategy games (I'm not into MMOs mind) my go-to entertainment device. The Wii's core game library was thin, while the 360's exclusives library was very narrow (deep, but narrow - noting I've got a PC, so when I say 'exclusive', I mean not available anywhere else, not just not available on console...
Looks good - nice to see indies coming up with some historical sim-style games :).
Haha, great article - I'm mainly on PS3 and PC, wouldn't want to do without either. Have a 360 as well, but could live without it ;).
