I own a 40'' 1080p hdtv and LCD projector ;) Both have vga inputs for my pc with a wireless mouse and keyboard - all in my living room. Also a usb controller and soon a bluetooth receiver to use my wiimote on. My PC doubles as a tivo and gaming system. Only kids can't figure out how to hook that up.

Eviltwin is right and nintendo has directly commented on the long legs of wii games when asked about the conduit and madworld sales. Wii music was considered a bomb for months after launch from initial npd figures...now it's at 2.5 million. The general idea is continuous sales and word of mouth sell wii games.
Scissor runner is entirely right about the hardware...the parts are contracted out - ati made the gpu in the xbox 360. IBM makes the processors for xbox and ps3. IBM OWNS THE PATENTS for the memory coherence architecture on the cell. They have considered putting them blade servers to use for dedicated servers for MMORPGs.
