I actually can't think of any blonde female characters that I really like... even when I love the games they are in (or even fronting). Odd.

Having played the first four Tomb Raider games (mostly for the first time) this year I can safely say that Tomb Raider III is just genuinely cruelly and obtusely-designed. I must have penned a sailor's bible before I finished it.

The game practically revels in swamping you up to the waist in bullshit: Oh, you see a ramp with a bolder in the distance and a passage to the side? Gotcha: Run into the passage to avoid the bould--PSYCHE! that passage also has a boulder hiding...

I got a 1070 recently and I can tell the card is being hobbled a lot by the slow AMD processor, especially in CPU bound games. For example, Dreamfall Chapters ran at anywhere from 30-100fps before, on the 6700k it runs from 60-120, major improvement.

The problem is I'm not seeing the boost in performance in the games I shoulld, and falling quite short of what benchmarks with similar hardware to mine had (I certainly shouldn't be getting WORSE performance).

Was. Went back to Win 7 and the issue persisted (on top of a load of shit breaking because Windows doesn't neatly roll back all your drivers; a shoddy attempt to get you to go right back to Win 10). The audio issue was related to he Realtek Audio Driver on the motherboard. Uninstalling it and going driver-commando fixed the issue.

But the other issue remains. Rather than attempt to get all the drivers Windows couldn't be bothered to retrieve I'm going to reinsta...

I just did a platform switch from an FX 8350 to a 6700k, and my performance is inexplicably poor; literally lost half the frames in some cases. I'm going to have to see what is going on but I'm guessing some kind of voltage drop/power saving feature is the culprit.

Meanwhile my audio (which is piped out from my motherboard to my AV receiver via optical) keeps cutting out because for some reason prolonged silence prompts the speakers to turn off... which is annoying ...

Unless I'm being dense here isn't having 4k upscaling obvious? I mean, unless we are expected to either play in a tiny window the middle of 4k screens (not going to happen) or experience an image potentially worse than that of the original Xbox One (depending on the quality of the scalers in other hardware in your setup). Why WOULDN'T it upscale to 4K?

"In this case, it feels like you're accusing the devs of something that they probably don't even care about. The issue is non-existant, and you're the one making an issue out of nothing imo."

TBH, you could say the same of pretty much every 'controversy' out there. People thinking their priorities are far more shared and have greater weight than they really do, then get mad when the world doesn't reflect that.

TBH I don't really care what the default Ryder is because I'll not be using them anyway... I'm more concerned about the character creation suite and what I can do with it.

edit: I like the idea of having reversible covers so the default Ryder could be male on some boxes and female on others, and you can change it at will.

That actually sounds kinda awesome and very much a Zelda-ish take on the whole 'open-world' thing. Glad that Zelda is approaching things in a way that makes sense for Zelda instead of just piggy-backing on whatever is popular and churning out something generic.

The current Xbox One is admittedly a big box, but IMO as long as it can comfortably fit into an entertainment centre it doesn't matter if its an Xbox One-sized box or a PS4-sized box.

One day, I'll actually play these hostess mini-games... when they aren't so exorbitantly expensive that buying armour, guns, swords and all the other things I can get to turn Kiryuu into a fighting god isn't a better use of pretend money.

In thought AMD already responded to the 'lesser settings' thing. Or was their response countered and dismissed?

TBH they kind of can't show anything story wise, but they need to show something of substance. Something that suggests there is a whole of a game (even in microcosm) forming rather than disparate parts. And that should definitely exist after a whole year even if some smokes and mirrors have to be used to give in the impression of coherency when there isn't any yet (pretty much the reason why a vertical slice exists -- the dev has to convey what their game is without having a realised ...

They've not really shown anything of substance since the reveal. A render here, an animation there, but nothing significant. So they kind of have to show something at this point.

But, TBH, I don't see why people finding Nadine's fighting prowess hard to believe. She has a formal military background and leads her own mercenary unit, so we can assume she has had her fair share of training and combat experience as well as some tactical prowess on the battlefield in general that mercenaries can respect.

After all, she's not punching above what her weight would suggest or Dragon Ball Z'ing Nate around the place or anything — she's jus...

I thought they were setting up The Adventures of Sam and Sully at the end there. I just don't see how Cassie could become the kind of adventurer an Uncharted game needs without some huge life changing event thrust upon her, Tomb Raider 2013 style.

TBH the methodology Naughty Dog is mentioning here is sounds exactly like shoehorning, albeit shoehorning that actually worked out okay. Although I'm making an assumption here.

You don't just take a character, then change an aspect about them if you can and run with it. A character is supposed to be thoroughly thought out and have a backstory that moulds them (even if that backstory doesn't make it into the game, the presence of it will lend the character believ...

Conversely (and as a matter of fact) we should also hold gushing positive reviews to a similar standard. If the review can't actually articulate and substantiate an opinion (regardless of what it thinks of the game) then it has failed in one of its primary duties as a review.

It's just a lot easier to catch lazy appraisal/writing when the score is well off the critical consensus than not (partly because people are more likely to actually read those reviews than just...

I would use the term 'interest piece' to describe what you are calling an article/opinion piece because if you say a review is an 'opinion piece' people get fixated on the retrograde semantics of whether a review is an opinion/includes an opinion or not (well of course it does. No shit!).

But I do agree with you: A review serves a fundamentally different purpose and is approached with a different mindset/methodology than an interest piece (which is a selecti...

That's certainly an interesting insight. I might tune into that aspect of it on a subsequent playthrough.
