Sadly I think releasing so close to FF13 will mean this awesome, awesome RPG has its sales gobbled up by Square's monster.

Pirated copy, ban this scum.

Well, this is the largest GAME store. It was 2 floors. Best Buy etc are basically what we call Supermarkets here, which are an entirely different kettle of fish.

Methinks you're going to miss out, Ninji. 3D dot heroes is a pretty game, but the gameplay is more stale than FF13 will ever be.

The term 'RPG' is diversifying, though. Look at Crystal Bearers, that has no levels either. Borderlands has levels, but doesn't have many of the ability-based stuff RPGs like Oblivion have, just a very simple skill tree... yet both are RPGs.

I think it's a good thing tbh. RPGs were often a niche genre, stuff like this makes them more actiony, better to look at and with a wider appeal.

Hey, it's acknowledged the system is likely to be very similar to FFX in the piece. It's just a speculative article about what the lack of levels could mean for what we've seen of FF13's gameplay based on the videos and the various hands-on experiences we've had.

Curious though; who are you on GAF?

Well, once you've read into it a bit, FF13 has pretty similar systems to FF10 and FF12 in terms of character growth. 10 was alright but I felt 12 was weak in that area and evidently so did Square as they completely gutted the system and redid it for the International version.

I hope it's good. Both of those systems needed work. Best FF growth systems are still 3/5's job system, 7's Materia and 9's equipment skills.

Eternal Sonata has a unique story idea at least with the chopin stuff. The game itself is pretty standard I think.

Good game, doesn't stand up against the others on this list, though..

There are still some Innovative RPGs on the 360, y'know.

VC is good, but it isn't even the best RPG of 2008. That title belongs to Persona 4. ;)

True enough, there are a lot of good rpgs on xbox too, though. The winner owns both consoles.

They have already announced DLC for Borderlands... and the base game is incredible anyway!

Would love a new Persona. Or even Persona 4 FES on PS3 in HD.

I dunno. ME and VC are really like chalk and cheese. They're so different they're not even worth comparing. VC is definitely the best SRPG out there, ME is definitely the best plot & choice driven RPG out there.

Oblivion over Fallout, eh? Hmm.

I'm preordering now. :)

@NathanGra All the in-game characters have a summon. Summons in this game are a bit like transformers. They have basic attacks they can do, like FFX, but when you're ready and charged to really damage the enemy instead of pressing Overdrive you enter "Driving Mode".

In the case of Shiva she turns into the bike and Snow rides her, and does some driving tricks to cast icy spells. In the case of Sazh (black dude) his summon is like a transformer, turning from a giant shiel...

Horse is Slepnir, Odin's steed. Square got it wrong though as Slepnir is meant to have 8 legs.

Well, this same boxart has been shown at both TGS at the FF13 booth and has now been released/leaked in high res... it's looking more likely.
