Looks like Returnal is sold out at amazon. Cool to see a fairly difficult rouge-like that was a pretty risky project for Housemarque be received so well. Spectacular game that I hope also wins a bunch of sound design awards, which it definitely deserves.
I can't deny I liked some of the key characters like Judy, Panam, and Johnny, and the world was pretty awesome (probably ran better for me than most given I was on PC). It has needed quite a bit of work, though. Many games have been improved significantly form when they were launched, but a hell of a lot needs to happen before this can go from what it was at release to "great."
Ray tracing was computationally expensive in 2018 when it was new to the market. It still is. It will continue to be taxing into the future. Insomniac has demonstrated a pretty sensible approach using light ray tracing effects when beneficial with the cost offset by reconstruction. It looks good, and you can still play at a decently solid 60 fps most of the time. Going heavy with a "ray tracing mode" in most games I've played is often a 30 fps (if that) mode I really don't w...
I want to continue to see games that do things different instead of sequels that are similar to the previous ten games in a series before it. Many sequels are great, but that's not the only type of game I want. The pacing can vary as long as the quality is high.
I thought Ratchet, Returnal, and Forza Horizon 5 would be the most obvious nominees for GotY for 2021, and only 1 of 3 of those is actually on their list. LOL.
You'll probably find a few in the comments somewhere claiming it made them projectile vomit for 2 days and required hospitalization. Some of the hyperbole about the most minor concerns like 1 or 2 frame drops or motion blur being enabled can get pretty ridiculous. I'd like to see how these fragile individuals would handle Marine Corps boot camp, which I found to be considerably more taxing than a small frame drop or motion blur. These people don't sound like they could handle anyt...
@Freediver Alex is mostly a PC gamer, not an Xbox fan. He gave a fairly positive assessment of Returnal, and this was during the span of time where many were just regurgitating the 1080p crap. He was impressed with the game and was eager to play it again even with a controller on console, not his preference typically. The title of the DF video was "Returnal: Housemarque Pushes PlayStation 5 HARD - With Spectacular Results."
How many of the games we get these days are multiple sequels? Talk about games we've played before...
It's a remarkable effort for their very first game, and the obvious expertise they have in artistry and presentation was exceptional.
@locomorales If it was a story based on an African mythology and one or more of the characters were made Caucasian, most of the social justice wingnuts would be losing their minds. Hardly anyone has a problem with whatever race is in a game as one might notice with the sales of some of Rockstar's games. However, it's a bit unusual to have a multicultural cast in Norse mythology just as it would be a bit peculiar to have Caucasian characters in African mythology. And you're proba...
Hey, it looks like it's on sale again on the PSN Store.
It's a pretty solid game. I wouldn't say it's in Gran Turismo territory, but it was well worth the small amount I paid. They really did a great job trying to make it as immersive as possible. The audio and haptic feedback are very impressive. I think it was on sale for something like $15 to $20 on the PSN Store when I got it. It was a steal for that price. I would wait and watch to see if it drops to that price again.
If you have a PS5, WRC9 has a very impressive haptic feedback implementation. It has a 120 Hz mode, too. Oh, the price is way higher for the PS5 version. Nevermind. It was on sale in the PSN Store for way less when I bought it.
Toss a coin to your Projekt?
"The way she killed him says more about her being a monster than anything."
And why not follow up the torture porn with making you play as this sadistic, roided up psychopath with no redeeming qualities for half the game? Brilliant idea. And she has the most remarkable metabolism in history, too. She takes a few bites of a burrito in the entire game and barely sleeps yet retains muscle mass like a gorilla. I used to work out with a couple of bodybuilders in colleg...
I've already played through this game on PC, but I am interested to see what they did with the audio and haptic feedback. It's a surprisingly good game and was very impressive visually, especially from a small team.

If they were charging that amount for just a simple specs tweak (such as the one they already released for free in addition to a significant co-op expansion for free), I would be on the attack. This Director's Cut includes an expansion and graphical improvements that are beyond tweaking a setting or two or some sort of boost mode type of improvement that is typically cheap and easy to do. It's obviously far from the Bluepoint treatment, which would merit full price, but it's also ...
I love Nintendo's games, but the pricing being midway between the Xbox Series S and the digital version of the PS5 is...questionable in terms of value. I'm pretty confident Nintendo could have boosted it beyond 2017 Switch tech at a very reasonable cost to them. I don't mean even trying to compete with Xbox and PlayStation, either. Just to run games smoother if nothing else like a "boost mode" type of improvement.
Ah, so you deserve a free co-op mode that was already added as well as a significant upgrade and new content for free? This is after SP also released a PS5 patch so the PS4 version ran at Pro spec but at 60 fps at no cost. When is SP allowed to charge for their (superb) work again? Paying the personnel to complete all this content and upgrades is definitely NOT free. This new version is not just a simple specs tweak. A substantial amount of work was put into this.
"i heard things in returnal i hadnt heard with headphones 3 times the price"
Were any of those made by Sennheiser or Beyerdynamic? Both make headsets priced in a similar ballpark I would think would be quite competitive with the Pulse headset, especially with recent holiday sale prices. I've seen the PC37x selling for less than the Pulse at $95 recently.
