There are a couple of reasons why they use cases like that. For one thing, standardizing cases makes it easier for both companies to know what to use and for consumers to keep a "standard" collection. This might sound trivial to some and to a degree it is, but you will see people complaining about steel book sizes and in some cases actually prefer a smaller case if they're on the PS3 and vice versa on the 360.

Well on one hand there is Onlive, which is pretty much that, but on the other hand I don't think we will get anything better than that. These things can be costly and difficult to work out and odds are they won't not have the same perks / automatic consumption you see with movie / tv streaming services.
