Dragon Quest is fairly better than Final Fantasy games.
Why? IMO both are somewhat overrated, but DQ games give you that sense of exploration and adventure you don't see much in JRPGs anymore. They aren't complex nor need deep storylines, they're just old school-like RPGs and that's what I love about them.

And actually, I liked Gestalt Nier over Replicant Nier.

And the novel part of the game was one of my favorites, the writing was excellent and it was something different.
About the wolves, it applies to all bosses except Wendy and some I won't spoil, but that's when the game's "Not everything is what it seems" comes into play. It was one of my favorite parts of the game, showing both sides of the coin.
Pros are simple:
Great storyline (With great I mean GREAT.)
Great characters
Great music
It just has some "magic" in it, you would say.
Cons:
Gameplay is...average.
Graphics.
...as long as they provide a challenge and it's just not spamming attack.
Folklore, Nier and Armored Core belong there.
Opinions. I think others are better, like the PS1 and the SNES.

The boxart looks somewhat bland.
Sorry, but the lock-on in RDR takes all need of aiming on the game. I played the game on Expert because of that, and I seriously think playing on Normal or Casual made it Autoaim: The Game. And it's even worse on multiplayer. Lock on for games like Zelda or such is a good idea, lock-on for shooters is a bad, BAD idea.
Because it worked very well for OoT.
Say that to DQ9.
The only thing I hate about DQ games is Toriyama's artwork.
