As a BF exclusive player (between BF and COD), I could not care less. COD is dead to me and what people play on their time is their own business. At the end of the day, BF4 WILL make enough to be successful, so that's good enough for me. If you are looking for me during that time, you can find me on the Battlefield.
All jokes aside ... some people are collectors and some just want to take advantage of a deal they have the sense of feeling may never happen again. You may not plan on playing it now but what if two weeks from now you have the sudden urge and you DIDN'T buy it. /shrug, I honestly don't know what drives most because, I myself, have a backlog of Steam games that I will probably never play. Summer Seal!
I love Steam sales just as much as anybody else but the last year or so they have been, for the lack of better words, 'watered down' due to the awesome sales of GMG, Amazon, Gamersgate, GOG, etc. Like you said, look around because most of these games sold on these sights are Steam activated. None the less, I'm ready for the Steam Summer Seal (not a spelling error ;) ) to start today!

You will be surprised what happens the last day of a kickstarter. Camelot Unchained was short 120k of their 2 mill goal in their last 24 hours. It ended at 2.2mill....backers will come out of the woodwork. :)

It will provide you Steam cards for in-game play time. Just not the Summer Sale cards you gain from spending money within Steam. I didn't disagree with you, if that even matters to you.
