MMO's in most cases, aren't "casual" games that are slowly beginning to dominate the console market (just look at all the new rock band and guitar hero games). They have things like theory crafters who min/max every spec/class/compostion/gear/sta ts possible. It's not something casual players tend to be drawn towards and with wow as the obvious exception.

Many of those studios, like fasa, weren't canned but only encorporated. Much of the staff from fasa studios joined the rare team, and MS still has controlling rights of those IP developed by them (including crimson skies, mech assaut, mech warrior, shadowrun). The same is possible to ensemble but that usually happens when a studio is under preforming.

Ensemble has been with MS a long time, making the age of empire series. I doubt they're being shut down, maybe some of the staff is being laid off but i doubt the studio is shutting down.
the story, specially told through eric nylunds novels are amazing. Even the terminal's in halo 3 give some scope to how great the story is. There are very few games with the originality of halo, name one other game where a parasite creature talks in rhyming verse, or where floating orb ai lyrically hum as they attempt the destruction of the universe. People who bash the source engine never played ep2 on full in high AA with hdr. The game looks stunning.
game movies don't trasition well. Specially game that have so much of it's story told during gameplay. Sure a mgs movie might work (mgs4 anyone?) but something like cod4 half-life or halo require the simple nuances you can only find during the game. Visceral combat, radio chatter, and secrets, something that doesn't emulate well in cinema.
