Sony and Nin also want more money. The difference from MS is their approach.
MS for a long time are use to buy things if they want to win. In fact they even pay to handicap the comp. They don't invest and forster dev. This is one of the key difference.
With Sony in particular. Sony understands that serving gaming and gamers is the way to make more money.

Despite everything I really wanted them to compete and help expand the industry further. However they are taking a different approach which is the easy route to nickle and dime people by look at games a platforms with minimal production value.
If I were to hire the best talent. I would listen to what that talent would say is best because that is what I paid for.

No Sony does not need MS. If anything MS pay to play online and time dlc and exclsuives has been really bad.
Sony by themselves like it was with the PS2 when they completely dominated was really good for gamers.
Sony dominating this gen from the start has also been better for gamers otherwise the second hand market would be dead right now without Sony.

I did call it last year. Switch was always going to be a bigger threat to MS for the second console spot than to the PS4 first spot.
Its already late into this gen. Many gamers have chosen the PS4. What is left mostly are casuals that care more about game selection and price

Considering that more 3rd party games are already on the PS4...
1. Sony had many great games from 2013-2014 both on PS3 and PS4
2. PS4 was cheaper
