I agree they should have waited though and give an entire new system. Trust me, I hate the upgrade game (which is why my dinosaur of a phone has buttons) and don't encourage it.
I suppose my only argument with this article is the complaint about how frequently refreshing the 3ds hardware with only minor updates is a bad business decision. I've seen it in several articles/analysis.
Now, I agree from a personal perspective, nothing is more frustrating than having to buy a slightly upgraded unit that is mostly the same as an older system, just to get a few exclusives.
However, considering how much money Apple makes doing the sa...
I think I'm in the minority about my distaste for the game.
Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of excellence and so many cool new ideas.
I just couldn't help hating the game because of Fi and having to repeat each section 4 times (and 1 entire dungeon) made what should have felt like a masterpiece instead feel like Nintendo stretched a 6 hour game into a 20+ one.
It kind of became a symbol of all the bad decisions they made duri...
Your last paragraph (in regards to exclusivity) is excellent.
As excited as I am for this, could they not keep it at bay for just 8 more days?
I mean it isn't a huge deal they showed it off, but this game would have been an awesome reveal for the Expo. Remember when E3 actually had surprises and excitement? It seems like all the conference is used for now is to rehash games they revealed a week prior.
Still awesome trailer, should be fun to play.
An excellent article. I was impressed the author presented actual examples from franchise history rather than a general claim. Well written and thought provoking.
Well put Foxtrot.
I know everyone has their own opinions and that is great, but I genuinely cannot understand the praise heaped upon Skyward Sword. It's not that it doesn't have some great ideas. I loved the combat, the art style, the inventive boss battles, and the concept of fighting your way to a dungeon.
The first time.
The fact that you have to complete each and every area four times, do a repeat of the already tedious tower quests found in BOTH Tracks and Hourg...
There was actually and interesting article in Game Informer talking about LucasArts. They actually had a very impressive development staff with a lot of great ideas that actually worked. They also had many of the titles we wanted (Jedi Knight, Kotor, Battlefront) in the works at one time. The problem was George Lucas and his hand picked management staff would literally walk in and scrap years of concepts and plans on a whim. They had a fully working build for 1313 that sounded genuinely i...
There was a rumor going around a while back about a Super Mario 64 remake with a full co-op option.
That would be an absolute blast, especially if they added another hundred stars utilizing partner-work.
Go into this game with limited expectations. There are a number of design choices that are extremely maddening.
Not trying to dissuade you, just giving a friendly word of caution. I know many people greatly enjoyed it, and I hope you do as well. I certainly wish I had.
I think using The Last of Us as an example was a poor move, but I do understand the base idea the author is trying to reach. The idea of manipulating a product/storyline and stretching it out beyond its original scope to make more money, and thus, diminishing the impact it should have had.
TV shows are especially guilty of this. Remember Prison Break? Originally intricately mapped out to forty episodes (two seasons) from its inception, then stretched out into what five sea...
The more I read about Nintendo's actual decisions (not the opinion pieces). The more I am starting to believe they are intentionally driving themselves into the ground to bolster their creativity.
Think about it. After the struggling with the Gamecube and original DS, everyone thought they were done. Then they came out with the DSLite, the Wii, and some of the best games since the N64 era all because their backs were against the wall. What came after their rampaging s...
Can anyone explain to me how the Mass Effect 3 port was a "solid effort"? It contained none of the extended content the other systems received and was completely overshadowed by the release of the Mass Effect Trilogy compilation a month later (which did not get a WiiU port).
Nintendo has enough problems/mistakes (big ones) as it is. Let's not shovel other companies' screw ups on top of them.
My gut reaction was to brush this article off as one designed to simply create controversy, or at least, the author can only appreciate a game if it has guns and no exploration. However, to be more fair, one aspect I did like was the point that nostalgia can mask imperfections and raise the status of a past experience beyond what it truly was. I wish more time had been given to utilizing this aspect to craft a compelling argument or critique instead of the article devolving into an opinion ...
That would be an impressive lineup and I agree it would be a major boon. However, we've been saying the same thing throughout the second half of the Wii's life and all of the WiiU's. That's going on what 5 years now?
I do hope 2014 is the year I can finally make my WiiU my primary console, but as you said, the games need to be ready to go. Enough promises, let's get some substance.
@GSKerns We seem to be in the minority in our opinion.
I didn't realize my statements were so incendiary. Since all but the last sentence were derived entirely from Mr. Fils-Aime's own words and history.
I thought the character growth and major plot points were fairly obvious within the first hour of meeting Ellie. I didn't care because the character interaction was so well done and the story was conveyed masterfully, but the basic outline was fairly standard.
Tough to take his comments seriously. At the VGX, after the Cranky Kong reveal, he honestly could not understand why people were underwhelmed. He even came out and asked "what more could you possibly want?"
And let's not forget during the Wii's time, he essentially told all the Wii owners to shut up when we went two years without a worthwhile game.
He does not really strike me as someone who understands what a 'strong' lineup shoul...
Your second paragraph nailed the core reason for third party failure.
