Classic God of War gameplay, bloody violence like only Kratos can bring, wonderfull graphics, all better than before...let's see...ah, the story is somewhat lesser than previous games, so let's start with that.
Game rocks like all God of War games. After 3 years of waiting I'm not disappointed at all. Play on Hard is all I can say.
Haven't played the game yet, but I see the same thing happening with the new God of War game, also a prequel. For some reason these games get lower scores, get marked down for being more of the same, unnessesary, even a cash cow.

Combat isn't much different as in previous games, but imo it feels better, more fluent. You can disarm enemies, pick up their weapons and use them in combo's or throw them to stun enemies. I also like you can include kicks and punches (brutal uppercuts) in your combo's. Parries are a bit harder, timing has to be perfect but I like that.
Bigger enemies can be brutally finished, but they'll fight back during those moves, so you gotta dodge and you have to do that by judg...
Weakest story, best combat, best graphics. Haven't touched the MP yet. Ascencion is a highly enjoyable game, if you're a fan you'll have a blast playing it just like the previous ones. I couldn't say which one I love most.
The thing is to use parry early. Not the moment a weapon is about to hit you, but the moment the attack against you starts. Some enemies attack quick, some take a little more time to swing their weapon. It's a bit different, but after adjusting it certainly doesn't feel unpredictable to me.
Pfff, already wrote a wall of text. Grayfoxxx881 2 comments above found the solution, so can you. Especially when you started gaming in the 80's, because shit was hard those days and patches you had to program yourself if you wanted them.

I think that says it all. People nowadays expect to just walk through games like it was a walk in the park. No challenge, no need to master the mechanics, the moves, what's handy when and what's not.
Then there's a difficulty spike, not uncommon at the end of a game. And than it happens. No health chests, no saving, too many enemies! Help! Four times already!

Counter move, or parry: L1 and X, needs to be unlocked first by upgrading your blades (no element) early in the game, I think it's the 1st or 2nd upgrade.
Timing is required of course, you gotta be quick. Enemy attacks are highlighted, just look at their weapons. I played & replayed all God of War games with a big smile on my face and with Ascencion it's the same, and I haven't touched the multiplayer yet. It's hard to believe some franchises with a yearly rehash get a free pass yet 3 years of work on Ascension gets so many harsh reviews.

I'm about half way in I think, and I really enjoy the gameplay, the killing is awesome and that's most important for me. The story doesn't really interest me in this game, but I can live with that because the gameplay (play it on hard, normal just doesn't do it for me anymore but I knew that since GoW3) and presentation are so amazing.
For a prequel I expected something else, and I really hope that will be done on PS4, so besides a GoW4 that continues the tale of Krato...
I just took a break playing this game, I'm not that far in so I didn't unlock a lot of moves and stuff yet, but if I would run into this idiot 'reviewer' I would press L3 and O, than R1 followed by O again, see him fly, wait till he gets up and let him make his move, L1 and X, a couple of []'s and O's to pick up his broomstick, L1 and O to throw the thing in his face, flick the stick to get in range and R1 for that bloody finisher.

Bought it yesterday for 65 euros, started playing on hard and I'm absolutely loving every second of it so far, it feels like the best God of War game imo.
And maaan does it look gooood, there were moments during the opening fight with Aegean the Hecatonchires I thought I would easily except the visuals on display as PS4 footage, it's really impressive how they turned it up a notch. Kinda like Naughty Dog did after the wonderfull Uncharted 2.
