In regard to Robin thinking that some people in the game development world would be thinking something like SoundSelf would be "a waste of time": I don't think most anyone would think that at all. VR brings such a new dimension to gaming, and I think that we're all very eager to experience it, whatever it may be. Maybe in 2D on a normal screen someone would question what the point of SoundSelf was, but in VR? I don't see how someone wouldn't want to at least try some...
Hmm, so it's a voice controlled game? I wonder how that works? Does the Oculus Rift have sound sensing capabilities, or do you need a microphone to play SoundSelf? Then also, if you were wearing headphones while playing this game, how would you know how loud you're speaking to control the game? Haha xD Soundself leaves me with so many questions.
It's such a fascinating concept though. Inducing a state of hypnosis or trance through a game is something so new to me....
Sounds completely fascinating! I can't imagine what playing a game like this in VR would be like. Just being able to put on a VR device and be able to experience the types of sensations that he's talking about... we're really on a new horizon when it comes to entertainment because of VR. Man, games that could make you feel like you're in deep meditation? The future's so darn cool :)
Really beautiful footage. I'm thinking that maybe it's a game that responds to music? Or maybe VR? That'd be amazing :D Thanks as always for all the giveaways!
I love their thoughts on game design and how they want the player to feel when they play a game. It's not just about creating gameplay that will keep someone playing for countless hours, but about how you as a game designer go about creating a feeling, an emotion in the player. That's always what immerses me in a game anyway.
I also really like that quote by Ryan Mohler. That what games are all about, an experience that you can't have anywhere else. I really can...
I definitely won't forget how to say their name now! :D (The classic Muppet Show is so awesome!). Just the thought of a studio like Funomena, made up of people who worked on Journey, Flower, and Katamari Damacy, making a VR game makes me smile like crazy.
I'm gonna go follow them on everything! Really looking forward to this fall to see what they announce.
Just looked Funomena up and wow, their company is made up of some amazing talent! :D I can't wait to see what they come up with. Thanks again for such an awesome Indie Month, N4G!
I had no idea that making games in Norway was so different. Yikes! Convincing investors to spend so much more must be really difficult. It's great that workers get a good, fair salary though! :)
Games truly are an emerging art form. As he said, there's so much in games that hasn't been done yet compared to other mediums. It seems like every week these days that I see a game with an idea that I'd never even imagined before.
And what a wonderful...
It's nice to hear such a direct opinion from a developer about the current consoles and so on. You don't hear that very often. (Although, I certainly wouldn't classify the brilliant 3DS as a "toy" :P)
And yeah, Myriad on VR probably would put you in the hospital! xD I like his idea of a hacking game in VR. I would love to see what a creative studio like Bifrost would do with VR, there are just so many possibilities.
I really hope that Fa...
So you conduct the music in Myriad as well as play it? I wonder how that works... it must require some good multitasking by the player to play an action game at the same time :D And that's really cool that the game stores your gameplay sessions so you can share them. Myriad looks like a beautiful game; it just has such a eye catching look to it!
Just looked the game up on their site, and wow, the screenshots look like you're playing a painting almost. Really cool :) Thanks for doing Indie Month and all these giveaways!
Whoa, cool, so you have to actually recharge your lantern or you can't see? That must add quite an element of panic if you run out light :D Nice to hear that there are teleporters to get back though.
Really cool of Nintendo to actually feature them on a Nintendo Direct too. I hope Nintendo continues to do that for more indies.
(And code preference: Steam. Thanks!)
Haha! xD That's quite a picture with the pickaxe! Image & Form sounds like a great company to work for, and wow, that's awesome that Sweden has such great laws regarding Parental leave (I wish the US had laws like that).
It's awesome that you guys moved on to deeper games rather than just make the type of mobile games that focus on a "hook" like you said. That must be a hard decision to make as a CEO though, considering how much money those type of ...
That was a great trailer. SteamWorld Dig really looks like a combination of Metroid, Terraria and even kinda Mega Man X (because of the wall jumping), and that's just awesome. The game seems like it has great atmosphere and music as well. It's really impressive :)
Oh, and my preference is for a Steam code.
Oh cool! SteamWorld Dig has always looked great from what I've seen of the game; Really cool combination of mining and platforming. Thanks for the giveaway, N4G!
And, my preference for a code would be for a Steam one.
Nice read! Insurgency sounds great, and man, that's a lot of different gameplay modes for a $15 game! I've always enjoyed teamwork based FPS games the most, instead of the more, as the article says, "Rambo"-ish ones. Teamwork just adds such a awesome element to FPS's.
Making a FPS game that is based on a more realistic sense of what being in a war is like must be really tough. I can't imagine what type of actual training/experience one must have to know what it's like to be shot at and then put that experience into a game.
So, considering how it's a one-life per map kind of game, and from what he said under "Why should people play Insurgency?", I'm guessing that this game focuses on a more realistic take on modern war? And not so much on the constant sprinting around, calling in killstreaks kind. That would definitely explain why the player was staying in the bunker for the trailer.
For a beta map, the game looks really impressive. Another great looking Source Mod! Thanks again for showing off these great games on Indie Month!
I see! So you do use a microphone to play SoundSelf. Makes sense, that's what I thought it would have to be (Guess I should've read this article first before the other ones). Thanks for describing how the game works, it all makes a lot more sense now.
I can really see now just how amazing something like SoundSelf could be for meditation. A game like this could truly help some people focus on meditating and tune-out the world around them. Whenever the Oculus Rift comes...
