Why not? Movies that were spawned from books left out vasts amounts of information but hit key elements of the story. The comparison is valid.
I wouldn't have had to play any of the titles you listed to understand what was transpiring in 4. I don't think anyone expects to know the entirety of any universe by playing a single game, and the latest installment at that. Halo 4 even had a short series to tie in events that were not directly impacting Chief called Spartan ...
I agree they needed to flesh out the reasoning for some of the decisions they made, such as the reappearing Warden.
It seems like they were trying to cram so much information in the time space they had, I'm sure scenes were cut from the game.
I liked the idea of the explorable hubs and wished they would expand on it with more dialogue options by speaking to other NPC's, ala Mass Effect style, and add options to configure your Spartan armor and weapon...

Not Battlefront. That would be one of least representative. More like KoToR, SWToR, Jedi Academy, Tie Fighter, X-Wing, Republic Commando, Force Unleashed... Those were worthy.
Game is fun and runs really nice after the patch. 1440p and 50-70fps on a 970 with another for Physx. Mark Hamill does another outstanding job with Joker.
Ah well, people care more about not enjoying games and have more fun trying to find ways to be unhappy.

Mass Effect is very close as well, especially being made by Bioware and the similarities to KoToR, but doesn't carry the weight Halo has had in video games with its following.
The universe has expanded dramatically sense it's inception and has a wide range of appeal to Sci Fi enthusiasts. It is something generations have grown up with along with characters they have followed.
