They made a huge mistake with the pad controiller. A simple HD upgrade of the Wii, with a better name than "Wii U" and $50 cheaper pricetag, would have done very well.

Lol... no. 60 Hz trumps 1080p, and the console GPUs just don't have what it takes to run 1080/60 on many kinds of games. The PS4 is close, but it's still only a HD 7850, effectively.

Any serious gamer will prefer 720/60 over 1080/30, when forced to choose... that's just the Plain Truth (tm). KZ is probably only running 1080/30 because Sony thinks running 1080p is more "current gen" and they want to wave KZ around as an example of how the PS4 can "...

TBH, CoD being 720p on XB1 seems like one of the few cases of *actual* dev lazyness, to me.

The numbers just don't add up. We know that the GPU is about 5x as powerful as the 360 GPU, so... why only 720p (over the 1024x600 of the 360 version)?

Probably it has some crazy AA or somesuch, but it sounds more like a dev decision to not optimize the XB1 version, or a rule or some benefit to hitting 1080p on Sony's platform, that they felt they needed to sp...

I think what Vulcan is trying to imply, huge PC fanboy that he is, is that neither console will be capable of hitting both 1080p and 60 Hz, outside if simpler genres (like racing).

The sad thing is... he's probably right. Even PCs, with higher-grade GPUs than the PS4, and faster CPUs than the XB1, have trouble hitting that mark, with decent graphic details enabled on some of these games.

It's all about balance, and frame rate trumps resolution, in mo...

@yellowgerbil:

"lazy" devs not going full 1080p? Are you serious? You should probably keep your opinions to yourself on said matter, if you don't (and you clearly don't) know what phrases like overdraw, thread warping, and shader cycles mean. Throw in GPGPU and mesh skinning, physics narrowphase, and animation decompression, for good measure.

Get back to us after you know WTH it takes to put 1080p and 60 hz onscreen in ANY genre, let alon...

Hmm. He forgot to mention the framerates. If PS4 is only 30, or a badly tearing 60, I'm gonna be upset -- 1080p is over 2x the screen real estate of 720p, but the PS4 GPU is not 2x the GPU.

I'd put money on the PS4 being an upscaled 1280x1080, or somesuch (~35% more than 720p), being that the equivalent PC GPU will have a LOT of trouble hitting 60 fps at 1920x1080.

Framerate is *always* king. Well, okay, after gameplay. The devs know that... well...

I am going to have so much fun when the actual analyses of these titles come out.

These rumors defy the laws of mathematics themselves. The XB1 and PS4 both have the muscle to do WAY more than 720p & 60Hz, even if they aren't both at 1080p & 60Hz. DICE would have had to fire all their engineers, and hire a bunch of fresh college n00bs to rewrite their game in Java instead. The trash that fanboys will believe these days is downright astounding.

Mad Otter is composed of several of the *original* Red Baron team, so I feel as though this is a pretty sure bet.

OTOH, I think that the modern gamer has such a short attention span, I'm not sure if he/she can actually appreciate a great flightsim, like Red Baron or the Aces games were -- even if there is a "casual" option.

I wish them luck, in any case, and will probably contribute to their kickstarter... make sure my Morane Bullet occasionally...

Small case, internal power supply
Larger case, external power supply

The small case is more appealing, from an aesthetics point of view, but its not more efficient, from a cooling point of view.

Sony chose small + internal supply. That's part of what the PS4 is. Don't go in thinking you're getting some physics wonder, you're not. You're getting a design choice.

at least 10 years.

The reason being that it's being produced at 28nm tech.

It will, eventually, make it to 14nm, and be price reduced, but what then?

The time-to-profit on 10nm tech will probably take 10 years in and of itself, given the cost of the fab tech at that scale. That means 10nm will be too expensive for console makers, for a good long while, and there will not be any price drops in sight when the price does make it to the $500...

Dunno. They haven't launched yet.

At this rate, Given that Super Mario Bros U, Super Luigi, W101, Zelda WW, Pikmin 3, etc. have already launched, I'd have to say.. maybe not all that much is gonna happen. Some of those games have been on the "look at what's next for Wii U" lis...

*Windows 8* PC.

I actually don't mind W8, personally. It's stable, fast, and the interface is nice once you get used to it. Basically W7 with a new interface. But there is that hook there. MS doesn't only sell hardware, you know.

Vita is fine, its just not stellar.

The Wii U is the only console or handheld in the current gen that is in actual trouble.

Are we including virtual console in that 1080p/60fps thing? Upscaling counts?

If so, Nintendo rox, and is totally unstoppable... until PS1 BC is on the PS4 that is, and also upscales.

Wow.. 100K is an upswing?

1.2M / year is going to put it behind the GameCube by the time this gen is over, and that's only if they can sustain these "triple normal" sales numbers.

11500, over the course of a likely 3 year project:

~3400/year

over 150 dev average (test doesn't usually get included... but I suppose this stat could include it for "wow" factor. That might bump the number to 250-300)

~23 meals/year/dev == ~2 meals/month/dev

...That's 1 night every two weeks, folks. Not exactly the showstopper statistic that people are all "upset" over, is it?

TBH the red ring thing kinda stopped after the Jasper 360s (65nm) came out in late 2008, and that was nearly 5 years ago now.

I hear ya though. I dunno what Pachter is talking about with games freezing on PS3 and not on 360.

Skyrim is the only major game I can think of that had that problem. ...well I guess Fallout 3 and Oblivion kinda had the problem too. Maybe Pachter really loves Bethesda's stuff.

"Bugbear Entertainment producer Joonas Laakso"

Read that CLOSELY. Note the title "producer", which is basically a game industry politician, NOT an engineer. Producers, for the most part, have NO idea what RAM latency is, or how if affects their project, outside of making engineers seem grumpier than normal.
