Well, I could be wrong (it happens you know), but my perception is Sony started out with this intention all along with the risks it was taking on blu-ray. Whereas MS seems more like responding to competition with HD-DVD as add-ons and such. If you ask me, Sony started with a clear focus in mind, whereas MS seems targeting everything in its path.

Actually it's not about Sony ignoring MS. It's more about positioning. Sony seems to position themselves as a lifestyle product targeting (I believe) people in the 20s or older, whereas MS positioning is mainly a gaming machine.
