I hear ya. I paid 740 for my setup, Onkyo HT-SP908 7.1 Channel Home Theater System. But you can get a good HDMI system in 5.1 for about 300-400. Tax returns are for splurging, lol.
And 768/channel maybe a bit high. A good uncompressed runs about 2Mb/s, with 2 being the ceiling. About 1.6 most of the time. Still a 2 hour movies is 10,800Mb for uncompressed. You are right, most don't care. But that is what the PS3 is about, putting the high-end stuff to work. Please don't take that...
Ok let me start by saying, I'm not trying to flame anyone. But to get 7.1 uncompressed,takes a ton of space. I also know some fool is going to say Dolby "insert" is just as good.

I went through 3, then sold it to my bro for 150. Mallard5000 for those who doubt. Got all the achivements from Oblivion and had some from NHL 07 and COD3. I rented COD2 also so should have some from that. Although that made me buy that POS COD3, so I'm not proud of those.
