I imagine Crytek would opt to use 640p or so, to maximize the 360 framerate with its 10MB eDRAM. Framebuffer resolution is probably the major visual difference between the 360 version and the PS3 version, outside of something like MLAA on the PS3.
I wouldn't doubt that the 360 version looks stellar, even if the PS3 version looks better (according to the devs themselves), however.
I don't understand. Where did any of those devs state they knew what hardware was in the next gen, as opposed to them merely updating their engines with modern PC tech? Console manufacturers don't release hardware specs to 3rd parties until they are ready to announce publicly, because the employees of those 3rd parties are not trustworthy, and too likely to leak info.
And from your tech pages regarding the PowerVR6:
"Further reports in English, it is a ...
Frankymv... the PowerVR series is a mobile chipset, and hardly capable of competing with the RSX for overall performance. They will not use it in a home console. Its a handheld GPU.
You're being overly optimistic about the tech economy, in my opinion, and making some pretty serious assumptions without any actual foundation. No developers have claimed the next gen is around the corner -- they'd be sued by the console manufacturers for even mentioning it, at this poi...
The idea is that, if you get someone to buy a PSN game *every* month, you're doing good business.
With this kind of service, many people will increase their "consumption" of PSN titles, and will receive other benefits to boot. Remember that digital goods are not very expensive to the provider -- they is no cost of goods, no retail cut, etc.
Sony would be obtaining a very valuable source of income by merely convincing users to purchase a subscri...
Your detachment from the technological perspective is sending you down the wrong path, conceptually. IMO, you're making some critical errors in your analysis, by assuming the tech industry, and associated products, will continue to behave as it always has, during its infancy. It is no longer an infant -- it has nearly completed its evolution. The laws of physics themselves are now the obstacles, rather than mere process.
The available tech both isn't cheap enough, ...
I guess since RDR isn't on the list, this must be FPS only.
Also... no BF:BC2? No MAG? Perhaps the title should have been "upcoming FPS shooters with the most promise"?
I will get this immediately, if I get a free PSN game every month, or some sort of monthly coupon for $5 of digital goods.
That alone would put it light years ahead of XBL, in terms of value.
The CPU couldn't be that. There isn't a low-power version of the Cell, and there would already have to be one, at this point, if such a device were to debut anytime soon.
Mobile chips are built specifically to save power -- their onboard logic is made differently, to explicitly require less juice, and thus save energy and heat. There are versions of the Cell with varying numbers of SPUs, yes, but they are not low power chips.
A handheld doesn't ...
I totally agree.
IMO, Trophies have a palpable value to them that Achievements just.. don't. The difference between a 20 point achievement, and a 25 point achievement is not noticed in the overall gamerscore, yet the difficulty is often drastically different from game to game. While the difference between similar trophies can be quite different from game to game, they are, for the most part, more similar than achievement points.
That, and the "l...
The Wii is a great system... however I don't think it will ever attract the traditional demographic like the X360 and PS3 do. It doesn't need to, to survive, or to do fantastically well, as a console (obviously) -- and for that same reason, it never will.
It most certainly fills a gap that needed filling, however. Haters need to appreciate it for what it is, rather than expecting it to compete directly with the HD consoles in their "home" demographic space...
My opinion on console shooters has changed so much since MAG... I have trouble even understanding why people enjoy MW2 and BF:BC2 anymore.
They do seem like they're for n00bs to me now. They (meaning MW1) didn't seem that way last year -- I suppose MW2's flaws have something to do with it, but honestly MW1 and BF:BC2 aren't all that much better (although they are somewhat).
When BF3 comes to the PS3, I will be in heaven. Or MAG 2... whatever...
Predictably, I think that most N4G readers will agree with the subject. The poster and approvers are also, predictably, very likely the authors of the article.
Sony owns Ratchet & Clank, as well as Resistance. It's VERY likely that Insomniac had a special deal with Sony, that allowed them, as a dev, to collect more royalties/copy than a deal with a 3rd party publisher (who has to pay Sony license fees per copy, and thus doesn't have as much extra $$ to share).
Established IPs sell better than new IPs. Ratchet & Clank was established. Engine development costs more money when its multiplat -- Insomniac probably uses...
Microsoft will not release another console without BC with the 360 -- because throwing away the 360 userbase would be a foolish, foolish manuever, at this point.
The whole reason Sony included BC on early PS3s was to attract early adopters who had a large PS2 library, while the PS3 library was still small, and the PS2 still had games coming. The whole reason GBA BC was on the original DS and DSLite (and is now gone), was for the same reason. The whole reason the 360 had any...
The PSP and DS contrast each other even more starkly then the Wii and X360/PS3 do.
They're not meant for the same audience. Sony doesn't give a crap what Nintendo does, unless Nintendo moves into the more hardcore turf. I doubt they feel threatened by the 3DS, because unless it covers a few of the PSP bases, like working as a MP3 and MP4 player, and also gets some hardcore game support (which it won't, until it's sold enough units), its not a concern.
All the PSP needs is some software love, and its getting it. If the Go gets a price cut, it may start to appeal to some (not too many, IMO) of the casual handheld audience as well.
The fact that its not for kids and casuals doesn't bother me in the slightest, as a gamer. I couldn't care less that it only has like 30-40% of the sales of the DS, just like I couldn't care less that the Wii outsells the X360 and PS3.
PS2 CPU --> 300 MHz MIPS processor, with two vector co-processors, running at 180 Hz (and 150 Hz? I forget)
PSP CPU --> 333 MHz MIPS processor, with built in Vector processor for speedy vector math.
PS2 GPU --> 147 MHz programmable GPU core, ~20M tris/sec, 2.35 Gpix/sec fill (lots of pixel pipes)
PSP GPU --> 166 MHz fixed-function GPU core, ~33M tris/sec, 0.66 Gpix/sec fill (fewer pixel pipes.. much smaller screen)

I'm really looking forward to seeing the show now!
I'm *really* curious as to how Natal will perform with Cirque de Soleil performers.. although I suppose if they put a lot of high-contrast makeup, and solid colored spandex on, Natal should have no troubles whatsoever.
This is gonna be fun stuff!
...and they aren't all that expensive, as I recall.
PS3s were cheap alternatives in 2006, at $600 a pop. I think the USAF could probably get by with some actual Cell-based servers nowadays, since IBM can actually afford to profit from them now.
Honestly, tech isn't the only factor here. Crytek's art team is probably better educated this time around as well -- they can get more out of the same hardware by utilizing it better from the art front.
Smarter alpha usage, smarter material swapping, etc. More bang, less buck, comes from more than merely horsepower.
