I would actually say the opposite. Sony succeeds mostly by taking known genres and honing them to perfection.
They do some research (MAG, LBP, and Flower are good examples), but most of their diversity comes from embracing genres they know are successful, and making an amazing, exclusive entry into that genre.
I actually think that's a very intelligent business plan, for a 1st party -- demonstrate that your console has the best in every major genre, and ...
Exclusive, 1st party studios have a directive beyond that of a multiplat studio -- they intentionally set out to make their game stand out amongst the crowd. It's almost their sole purpose -- effectively to trumpet and sell their parent company's console.
3rd party studios sole purpose is to make money -- at least in the eyes of their publisher. Its tough for publishers to stick their necks out... although if you look at Sony's 1st party titles... they almost *n...
They gave Gran Turismo 5 a 7/10, primarily because it was "too much like Gran Turismo"?
?
@Elven6: I think you're confusing user-run dedicated console servers (which XBL and PSN allow) with independent, high-bandwidth server machines (which PSN allows).
You can act as a host on XBL, sure. That doesn't yield the lag benefit I'm talking about... except for the host, that is. Any game which has host migration isn't using a true dedicated server -- like CoD. It's using a host server -- a form of P2P, which is different from "pure" peer...
PSP and 3DS sounds more like it.
MS doesn't allow dedicated servers, because they tightly control the networking environment. Hence, MMOs shy away, etc. It's not about the developers not trying to use them -- its about MS not allowing them through Live.
Sure, its cheaper for P2P (for the publisher, not the dev, and certainly not for MS)... it also sucks for lag, compared to dedicated servers. Some devs/publishers like to offer that kind of quality service... why not let them?
I...
Needs dedicated servers. Well... it doesn't *need* them, but cross-game chat doesn't seem to be worth the Gold fee to me.
I don't understand why MS can't offer this kind of service, at the rates they charge. Lag sucks. Seems like MS could spend a couple bucks on its loyal Gold members and make the service on par with the (free) competition in this area.
You should play it. Seriously. You really sound like you never have. Set the fanboyism aside and enjoy a great shooter, no matter what console its on.
MAG is loads more involved and interesting than CoD -- but you have to be able to weather sacrificing yourself for the team, and relying on your teammates to survive, and hence, have fun.
Don't get me wrong, it's great solo too -- proximity chat is so, so awesome. Lots of roles to play to help your ...
"1080P COD to 1000 x 638 at 30 FPS with screen tearing is a huge difference"
Pretty sure CoD runs at 60 FPS on the 360, with no tearing.
"Not to mention you guys have no RTS or MMO's"
Have you played Ruse with the Move on the PS3? I'd say its just as good as the PC version, actually. Did you know that there are several MMOs on the way to the PS3 as well, and that with modern-day bandwidth, text chat is hardly a n...
"Technicalities" is what they're calling it now? I liked "no buttons" and "you are the controller" better. They sound more catchy.
Jokes aside, I wonder if this guy understands that the CPU expense of Kinect (~%10 of the whole CPU... 30% of one core, according to many sources) is directly related to camera resolution.
If there are 4x the pixels, the cost is 4x as much. That's "40%" of the Xenon @ 30Hz, and th...
This may sound fanboyish, but... this guy (the article author) doesn't seem to know that all PS3s are fully BC with the entire PS1 library to this day.
That's a huge library, containing many of the greatest games ever made. I don't think it'd be a stretch to claim that the PS1 BC on the PS3 (and PSP) is as good a value as the GameCube BC on the Wii (or the XBox BC on the 360) -- it probably supports more, and better, titles, actually. The GC had some great g...
Honestly consoles are a lot closer to gaming PCs nowadays than they were in the past. In 2004, no console could touch a gaming PC -- not even close. In the late 90s, there was even more disparity, 4 years after the various console releases, like our current situation.
You still get the resolution boost, better features, etc. in PC games... but its not quite the difference that it was in the past. Eventually, I think the hassle, and expense, of putting together a good gamin...
I think you're missing the meaning of "3D" (stereoscopic), as of late, and going with the meaning of "3D" in the nineties.
Right, and that's exactly the result of the cost issue I stated.
DS games were dirt cheap to make, so there were a ton of them. 3DS... won't be the same.
It's not "being up" implies dedicated servers. That was my point.
Like I've always said... 3DS brings DS development into the same arena as the PSP.
The PSP had fewer games than the DS for a few reasons. One of the most important ones was development cost. It just plain costs more to make higher quality games. You can bet there will be a LOT of PSP/3DS crossplat games in the beginning, while the 3DS is still taking root.
Crazy Taxi needs Crazy Taxi 4... or Crazy Taxi 3D, not a port.
Take this into consideration, before you judge this $10-20K number: They're not talking RPGs, or Hideo Kojima games. The characters and plot are often cooked up by the game designers, and the writer has to base his/her material on those concepts.
Also, the vast majority of games, just don't have significant scripts, beyond a few lines of "do this, because this reason". You can bet that games that *do* have good plots pay their writers plenty more. $10-20...
Online isn't up yet? Is it dedicated servers? That would be... awesome. Way beyond awesome.
360 games with Silverlight? So... that's like Microsoft's answer to Flash, isn't it?
Somehow, the idea of playing Flash games on my 360 doesn't appeal very much. Without a browser, what kinds of "apps" would I really want on my not-portable 360, outside of Netflix and games?
