Exploring the planets is the motivation. It is procedurally generated in all aspects. You may happen upon planets discovered by other players, that is certainly a possibility, but chances are, you will not.
You may even fly by another user and not even know it. Since users are so spread out, it is quite possible that you may never meet. Kind of how life is unlikely to meet in our universe.
I wouldn't call these guys "Unproven." They have released games that have done well enough for them to follow this vision.

The game tells you exactly what happens to the Marquis de Lafayette. ***SPOILER*** He gains his knighthood during the game. It is a major part of the story.
He does have the blackwater and the members of the Order do take on the names of the former Order of the Round Table under King Arthur.
In fact, they show you exactly how the naming is played out between Galahad and Igraine whose real name is Isabeau.
