Considering how Nintendo is currently the only company with hype going for their games this year I have to respectfully disagree with this podcast.
What's being hyped for Sony or Microsoft's E3 this year? So far, nothing of note.
Nintendo? We've Wii U Zelda confirmed to be at this year's E3, Miyamoto's mystery IP, whatever Retro is working on and the huge Smash Bros event where thousands will be able to get their hands on an early build of Smash Bros.
Or Nintendo, as the next Stealth Inc is coming to Wii U Exclusively.

Gaming PC's are hella expensive I know that after I build mine it's going to be a while before I can buy anything else. Which is why I bought my Wii U earlier. Since it's easier to get first.
It's because Nintendo has great indie support and they're good at communicating with the developers. They win over developers by offering a better service, not better hardware.
Patience is a virtue, and Sony has definitely been patient.

And E3 isn't as good as what Nintendo is doing since let's be honest here. Is it better to only allow the press to play your early builds or everyone?

E3 is only for the press or specially invited guests. You can't go to E3. So you never will have to pay for travel or a hotel room.
Because the Wii U, like the Gamecube(Another "monumental disaster"). Is still profitable despite it's lack of hardware sales. Software income for the Wii U is pretty damn massive. We're talking more than half the install base buying New Mario Bros U, and that install base is currently the same size as the PS4's. PS4's biggest game sold to 1/3 of it's install base in comparison.
Furthermore, the Wii U is releasing it's big games this year, Mario Kart, ...
