It doesn't make sense to play as Joel because the writers dissociate you with Joel at the end of the game where you played as Ellie.
Joel is not a playable character he will be a fragment of Ellie's imagination after she witnesses him being executed.
No, the trailer leads you to believe that it was the girlfriend but in fact it was Joel who gets killed. She then goes into a revenge mission with Joel playing a similar role as the Joker did in Batman Arkham knight.

After seeing Half life : Aylx in action....I can say that Valve have kickstarted a new standard for VR.
It always gimmicks games but this time we have a game that is well designed and utilized the VR effectively. Story, Design, Gameplay, and graphics all in one to create a great game.

E3 is an exciting event where the biggest blockbuster games and indie games get announced. What not to like about that.
