Demons Souls was a lot harder than Dark Souls. Not even a debate!
First off, when Demons Souls launched there was nothing to ever fall back on except messages on the ground. Tons of gamers had to experience the difficulty and obscure, opaque atmosphere for the first time. That wasn't easy. We were guinea pigs.
Secondly, Dark Souls added bonfires which dramatically nerf the difficulty.

This game was fine. I don't understand the bashing either. The game stayed true to the series in almost every regard.
What exactly did these gamers expect to play? It was clearly a Castlevania game. The final boss took me about 15 tries on difficult which is ok. It wasn't too easy or too hard.
