DirectX is more convenient for developers, because it offers more functionality beyond the Direct3D graphics part, sound and input for example.
That said, I would love for DirectX to finally die off and be replaced with something that isn't tied to just one OS. I myself am using Linux.
However the biggest problem with DirectX is not DirectX itself. It's tied to Windows and therefore bound to head in the same direction as Microsoft is going. And if you...
Devil may Cry 4 came out in 2008. It fit on one Xbox 360 disc, which is 8,5GB in total, minus the mandatory XBox 360 intros in various resolutions and security stuff from Microsoft, the usable disc space for the developer was a little over 7GB, which they filled. Are you telling me that the disc space had nothing to do with the fact that in order to beat the game, you play with Nero half way through, then with Dante the same levels, the same enemies, the same bosses, backwards, the only diffe...
@Nukeitall
Physical disc stone age... spend more than half a second of thought on that topic and perhaps you will realize how stupid this statement is.
Games on PS3 range from 7GB multiplatform games with 3 hour campaigns and 5 MP maps, to 50GB behemoths. That was 720p.
Now we have 1080p, which almost doubles the texture size. In other words, games will get even bigger next gen, making 50GB a must for over 90% of full price games.

"World of Tanks is a multiplayer game, so I guess you'd need to pay for PS+ if it came to PS3/PS4. Just thought I'd throw that in there."
Wrong. PlanetSide 2, DC Universe Online, Warframe and Blacklight: Retribution are all free to play online games, none require a PS+ subscription to play.
Besides, PS3 and Vita multiplayer will remain free, only PS4 needs PS+ for buy to play multiplayer games.
They mentioned in an interview that it was Marcellus Wallace's soul.
Never. Never compare your title to another, this is the biggest PR mistake anyone can make.
Why would anyone want to play a knockoff over the original. It may not be a knockoff, but it's implied by the comparison.
The same thing happened in the '90's and Doom. During the FPS craze Doom created, many developers made FPS games, many said "it's like Doom" to describe their game. A huge mistake that resulted in sales for Doom more so tha...
Yeah, it took the small Warframe team at Digital Extremes 3 months to port it on the PS4, not 2! Cerny must be lying! ... Are you serious?
I wouldn't be surprised if Steve Sinclair, the Creative Director on Warframe, is porting it on his own while the rest of the team keeps working on Warframe for the PC.
Actually it doesn't matter how big a game is. All they need to port is the engine, the client and the updater. Obviously they'd have to come up with a different input method for the complex interface to work on a console, which would take more time than porting the game, actually.
They obviously don't need to recreate the leveldesign, art, music and sound. Just the stuff that puts that on screen, and even that only needs to be modified.
I've seen the devkit on Steve Sinclairs (Creative director on Warframe, Digital Extremes) in a video they released about the recent Warframe update 9, though it was since replaced with a video showing gameplay footage instead of office space, same sound though.
Everyone with half a brain knows he is part of a team. But every frontman gets branded as the maker or creator.
Haven't you ever seen things like: "Steven Spielberg, the creator of ...", or "David Jaffe, the father of ...".
I don't see how this situation with Mark Cerny being the lead architect, and ever since the reveal, the face of the PS4, is any different.
Ni no Kuni is not made by Sony, and actually not a new IP. It was first released on the Nintendo DS in 2010.
Yup, and while we're on the topic of system ram, fun fact: The XBox One and PS4s total system memory is bigger than ~95% of XBox 360 games (Excluding the few multi disc games).
DVD9, which is the format the 360 uses, has a total capacity of 8,5GB. However, due to the fact that mandated data from Microsoft has to be on every game disc, most games are only a little over 7GB in size. Among other things, developers have to include 480p and 720p (maybe even 1080p, not sure) vi...
And with the bump in texture sizes, expect games to hit the 50GB ceiling pretty soon. Kojima managed to hit it with current gen 5 years ago already.
God of War III was 33-40GB I believe.
And people are dreaming about a digital only future with their 10MBit connection and 500GB of storage...
They were hoping for Sony to go the same route, because Sony baited them with the DRM patent. In the end, if Sony also did this, there would be no option left, we would have to live with it and the prices would stay the same. If DRM would make games cheaper, they would've come out and said it right off the bat, this is such a juicy selling point, no PR person would pass it up.
Lucky for us Sony didn't, and MS was forced to backtrack on it.
Unreal Tournament III supported Mouse & KB on the PS3, as does Dust 514 and a few other games. Hardly news, the problem is that almost nobody is willing to bake in support for Mouse & KB into their games.
Wait and see, I have a feeling that "Ultimate Ultra Street Fighter IV Alpha EX Challenger Turbo Edition" will see the light of day at some point.
@Benchm4rk
No, Sony confirmed Free2Play games will not require PS+. Neither will Netflix, Hulu+ or any other app. Only Buy2Play games will require PS+. MMO's such as Elder Scrolls Online or Final Fantasy XIV will also not require PS+, as far as I know.
@thWB27
Seriously, do you honestly believe that, the same publishers who are still crying their eyes out about piracy and used games, would have been OK with the fact that Microsoft is giving away 10 licenses for new games for the price of one? Stop kidding yourself. It was a timed demo.
What Sony is doing is giving away older games for a monthly fee, of which the publisher who's title is being offered likely gets a cut as long as the title is on PS+. And...
@Gamertk421
Yeah we heard all that BS before. Here are some of the classics:
"Wait and see, developers will come up with hardcore games for Kinect!"
"How do you know no hardcore games will work with Kinect, are you a developer? They are creative!"
It's the same crap, it has more capabilities now, but it hasn't furthered it's chances for hardcore games. I can't believe people are so gullible...
Once again, proving himself to be brilliant but short sighted. His comments make it clear that he is thinking about the situation right now, rather than down the line. He doesn't take into account that console hardware will need to stay relevant for almost a decade, until the next generation of consoles arrives. While he may not see the additional 4GBs of ram as significant now, things will be a lot different 4,5,6 or even 7 years down the line. He just doesn't see it.
