Deus Ex remains one of my favorite games of all time.
But boy is it sure ugly nowadays >.<
Even under the broadest definition, Demon's Souls is practically the epitome of RPG.
Any game where you can easily find a solid catalogue of "Character builds" is generally pretty darn close to core RPG.
Though not to the same extent, I actually agree with caseh.
If you had to pin down a genre, it'd be more turn-based strategy with RPG elements for Valkryia. It's a great game, but it's definitely more strategy than role-playing.
Now, for a contrast, consider King's Bounty. That game's style of play (combat) is pure turn-based strategy, but progression and everything else is RPG to the core.
Although I suppose you could cal...
I'd say what turns me off most about Brink is that it sounds like a watered-down version of TF2, less polished, less balanced, more expensive, and containing less content.
Sure, TF2 only had 7 or so maps when it was first released, but it also only cost 20 bucks, less if you got it in the Orange Box. Nowadays, it only costs 10 and has fifty times as much content.
I'm not saying TF2 is super ungodly amazing, but the price to polish/content/everythingel...
...and the Green-Red Show.
Different fellas handled each review. Yeah, sure, you can say that they should have some kind of larger editorial oversight, but the articles are entirely different entities.
Well, unfortunately, "Just patch it later," doesn't really work for too many games. The low early review scores make sales poor, and it's not something they're easily able to recoup.
Especially not on consoles. PC and Steam might keep the game alive if the improvements and additions pile in, as there will probably be free weekends and big sales to get people's attention.
But for something which is essentially a less-polished Team For...
One of the most interesting things you discover is that Chell was a child of one of the employees.
*MINOR SPOILER*
If you look at the potato battery dioramas and zoom in on one of them at the corner, you can see Chell's name signed there. It means she's probably been there for quite a long time by this point, hibernation notwithstanding.
Oh yeah, and pointing out sex appeal is dumb, but hey, I suppose placing dumb criticism on hit gam...
Something very important to note that a few people have brought up:
It does not matter what Sony's EULA states if negligence can be proven on their part. Agreements are always two-sided, and it may not be directly alluded to in the EULA itself, but Sony can still be liable in spite of the agreement.
Think of it like a skiing trip. You sign a waver saying you won't sue if injured or whatever during the course of the trip. However, if your instructor/gu...
Morally bankrupt perhaps, but their skill implies a certain level of intelligence.
Well, nah screw it: dumb as a bag of hammers.
Kojima has done significant things for gaming, but he's allowed his craft to stagnate over the years, probably due to fans and critics dumping excessive praise and for some reason not pointing out where things could be improved.
He is by no means the best, his word is not law, and golden bricks don't tumble out of his butt.
Maybe the guy really is arrogant, or maybe we just get that impression because 3/4ths of MGS fans seem to think he's some kind of God. I don't really know.
What I do know is that he gets far more credit than is earned, and that people will praise him to death no matter what he puts out.
All right, slight qualify: I own and have played (many times) MGS 1-4. I really like them with the exception of #4, which I thought was pretty good but mired in extrem...
They were probably considering more of a look at Aperture's past pre-portal invention for their story focus.
Now, *incredibly minor spoiler* some of that is still covered in the new game (and it's fantastic), but it might have been interesting to see the whole thing about the foundation and development of the wacky company.
They'd have to change their business model pretty heavily. Apple enjoys their comfortable 30-point profit margins. I'd imagine they'd have a hard time selling consoles at a loss, and they wouldn't be able to compete otherwise.
Of course, they might just focus on bringing more game development to existing devices and increasing the functionality of those. For example, future generations of iPad will probably have a lot of tech crammed in. You can play games on ...
Microsoft can't seem to do much these days. The current industry for electronic products is more about smaller devices (smartphones, MP3 players, tablets), and good old MS is sooooo far behind.
The 360 and Windows 7 are about the only decent things Microsoft has these days. Of course, like everything else, the success of the 360 is due to the games and developers more than the company.
Well, your rampant desires have an unfortunate shelf-life, as it sounds like they're shutting down the multi-player servers in October this year.
The multi-player (and mostly the fact that you don't have to deal with howling jackasses, griefers, and whatnot) plays a big part in the atmosphere, and honestly it helps to mitigate some of the crushing difficulty at times.
And for God's sake, how many games yank another player in to serve as the final ...
Variety is nice, but when you have a short, hairy, underground dwelling race called the "Shuggin'Toth," everyone bloody-well knows what you're talking about and that, while you're coming up with a new name, nothing about it is really original.
Utilizing established tropes is one way to limit the amount of redundant exposition needed to explain certain things. Elves prance about the forests and like to shoot bows? Check. Dwarves live underground and are u...
The first one was a spectacular example of how to do solid, character-driven dark fantasy.
However, the combat was a bit sticky and awkward. Not bad, just not super-amazing. Of course, the story and everything else blew most other offerings out of the water. No, Mass Effect (also 2) and Dragon Age (haven't played sequel), aren't among those blasted away, but in my mind they're pretty on par with The Witcher. Very excited to see W2 released next month.
Although JRPG and WRPG refer almost more to stylistic elements nowadays than they do actual creation region.
Demon's Souls (for example) had very prominent western fantasy RPG tendencies (darker themes, non-sensationalist design/characters/everything), but this is by no means bad. Demon's Souls is such an amazing game, but it definitely departs from the usual JRPG themes.
Not to continue nitpicking, but another of your examples, Valkyria Chronicles, i...
Cave Story for sure. It'll probably forever sit in my top 5 games (paid or otherwise).
While I Wanna Be The Guy is an interesting experience for certain, it honestly isn't difficult but a matter of silly design. It's a sequence of trial and error matched with memorization and sequence repetition. Good difficulty is fair; the game allows you to develop the necessary skills to survive. It essentially means you're capable of living through some of the challenges ...
