Sazh has a whole lot of screen time. All those chapters with Vanille. How she hides form him that she made his son a l'cie. How he has difficulty to cope with that news.
Snow gets kidnapped then comes back muuuch later, but Sazh doesn't.
The fact that he didn't mention this game while it is clearly the subject matter makes me believe he isn't such a good writer. Or at least that he's not that interested in the subject. He would have made some research. And a minimal search on wikipedia is enough to learn about the attempts made to have Zelda as a protagonist.

Depends of the subject matter.
Take games like Catherine. It would not have been possible if the protagonist was a woman. Slight spoilers: The pregnancy bomb. That part of the story can only really work with characters of specific genders.
But for some games it's not important:
Lara Croft or Nathan Drake are pretty much interchangeable if you ask me. Same for say, Lightning and Cloud, or Dante and Bayonetta.

Well you can still grow stronger by grinding monsters, as they drop gil, skills and materials to upgrade your equipment. Also, dropped skills come with unique attached abilities, like elemental resistance or ATB recharge.
As for quest stats increase, they carry on to new game+ and will give stats increase again on multiple play throughs, meaning quests are really like some meta exp grind, only a bit less mindless than running around in circles waiting for monsters to attack y...
I loved XIII and XIII-2, and the battle system in LR seems easy to grasp, as I've played Valkyrie Profile and games like Radiata Stories / Tales / Star Ocean.
But, you know, I want a demo of what I'll have as a final product. :)

But I've been reading about it on forums, and what I gathered is that I will really love the game, even with the flaws it shows!
I liked XIII much more than XIII-2 too.
I thought XIII-2 was way too easy. Most battles could be won with a simple rav/com/com setup.
