Emulation isn't illegal if you own the original cartridge. It's also kind of a gray area when the software was never licensed in your country. Of course in this particular case it was but you know.
Final Fantasy has always been linear since the first game. A game can be linear and good. Some do it well. Some don't.
But you're right. X was probably the last good one. I did enjoy Crisis Core on PSP even if it was short as hell though.
To be fair, I don't think we should expect too much functionality from the second screen since the original game wasn't designed with it in mind.
I don't personally plan on getting a Wii U anytime soon but any new functionality in an HD port is pretty neat.
It's been done in a lot of fighting games already. I seem to remember Sakurai even talked about wanting to implement it in Brawl but running out of time or something.

It's actually just about as hard as Dark Souls but much MUCH more unforgiving.
I personally preferred Dark Souls because of that.

They are but you have the occasional "can't really do without" content. The Interactive comic backstory in Mass Effect 2 was only downloadable with the online pass if my memory serves. You can totally play the game without it but most people wouldn't and they knew it.
