Did these congressmen find a CAUSAL link between violent games and violent behavior? Or was it just a correlation? Is it not possible that the violent tendencies in some of these people are attracting them to the violent video games? You can't really expect a kid who likes torturing small forest critters to play Hannah Montana.

This congressman apparently has no background in any science, particularly not psychology. He needs to learn the difference between correlation a...

@Neckbear & Brandon

CoD probably wouldn't do it, but I could see a new IP offering a map editor, then instead of new maps as DLC, they offer new map building tools. Win-win.
The guys who left Infinity Ward are apparently starting a new studio. I could see them doing just that.

Well then. Like I commented on another article. Give FPS players a map editor and let them create their own MP maps.

Isn't it possible that the author should have been more precise? Is there a GTA title higher rated than 4? Or, for that matter, a PS3 title higher rated than GTA4?

Edit: I just looked on MetaCritic. The top two spots are GTA4. Then Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, then THPS3 and GTA3.

I don't know if mandatory autosaves are possible. They should definitely be more common.

I keep all my ideas locked safely away in my head.

The mode editor is good. I didn't think to go that far. You'd not only be able to build the map, you'd also be able to define the objective(s). Make achievement of the objectives either cooperative or competitive. Maybe the guys who left Infinity Ward should read this, then apply these ideas to a new IP. I think they're starting a new studio under EA.

I have to ask..... what can be done to really innovate? What can devs do to take FPS games to the next level without seeming like a gimmick or just adding some new option? And which studio will be the most likely source of this innovation?

I'll make the first suggestion now. I don't know how big this would be or if it's been done before, but why not do for FPS games what LittleBigPlanet did for platform games? Introduce a MultiPlayer map editor. Player can create...

Would it help if I suggested the possibility of starting the PS3 exclusive BEFORE you finish the 360 exclusive?

Or maybe I could just point out that you completely missed the central thesis of my blog, while implicitly agreeing with it, "Both systems have something for everyone. So go fire one up and play.... and have fun."

The "console wars" are an unnecessary and pointless distraction from the real reason we have game systems in the fi...

@catguykyou I am not the grammar police. First of all they're not nearly as polite as I am. Second, there are no spelling or grammatical errors that I could see, just one instance where I would have used a different word. I don't preach, I practice.
@ElementX You're right. On top of that bi-weekly is the same as fortnightly: every two weeks. Good catch.
@ t0mmyb0y I talk like that. Not really trying to sound smart. I can be a little pretentious at times, however....

This is me picking nits.
In the opening paragraph you used the word 'fortnightly.' This, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. There is one problem: not all of us yanks recognize a fortnight as two weeks. I would have used semimonthly, even if I were born and raised in Hounslow.

As for the rest of the piece, you did bring up some good points. There is one small part of #5 that I want to disagree with, but only partially. Most of the games I play have a score...

My 40GB PS3 lasted 2 1/2 years before the blu-ray drive wore out. That was the first time in 15 years I sent a Sony system off to be fixed.

I won't disagree. Making money is the purpose of any business. Where Sony, MS, and Nintendo differ is in their respective strategies. Nintendo decided to focus more on the casual market. Truth is; Nintendo has always been for kids. Remember the big stir they created when they started including blood in some of their games. Microsoft makes deals for timed exclusivity and creates proprietary data storage (the HDD). Sony provides state of the art tech (cell, blu-ray), quality products (Uncha...

There are drawbacks with any psychological study. Surveys have no depth, but you get a great sampling of the population being studied. A case study has great depth, but your sample size is one individual, and he's mentally ill. Experiments have legal and ethical limitations (as you pointed out). Observation "in the wild" is subject to the observer-expectancy effect. People change their behavior when they know they're being watched.

Pathological gamers find it very difficult to put down the controller, like an addiction. Or just about any personality disorder: a perfectly normal trait taken to a potentially harmful extreme.

A good example would be Schizoid Personality Disorder: a quiet, introverted personality is perfectly normal, but when that introversion keeps a person from meeting his day to day needs, it might be time to visit a therapist.

I've had ONE semester of psychology for my engineering major, and I know the difference between correlation and causality. For all we know the anxiety and depression could be the cause of the pathological gaming.

And this was published in a peer-reviewed journal.... suggesting a new use for all those pediatricians' golf clubs.

The mathematical concept of counting numbers suggests that 2001-2010 was the last decade. You are right about the eleven years thing. I found myself thinking this article was written by a guy who did just well enough on his GED to get a passing grade, probably just a few weeks ago. It was just overall bad writing and sloppy editing.

The choice of games wasn't too bad though. I would have added Little Big Planet, right between Uncharted and Heavy rain.
