The sources that say this are only trying a weak attempt to do something/anything that will somehow slow the sales of the current PS3, as by end of 2011 the PS3 will surpass the total sales of the 360 and that scare certain types of people.
Personally I see 2013 or maybe early 2014 for the PS4, plus by that time if they are going to use updated Cell based tech/hardware and such the cost would also be low and more manageable to be REALLY competitively priced.

What certain closed minded people here like to overlook is if you look at how much the PS3 has out sold the 360 over 2010 (which BTW was over 3.1 Million) you can easily understand why the amount that the 360 "leads" (and I use that term loosely because that is not including bans, E74's, RROD's & etc) is not a big deal to overcome.

Faster ram is better than more ram (to a point but even then), and the PS3 has some damned fast hardware in it. Remember the PS3 has 4 times the internal bandwidth, twice the memory bandwidth and much faster ram than the 360. This is why there is much more room to grow and get out of a PS3 than a 360.
