The FFXV system is a terrible ARPG system. The KH-esque system it has is miles better. Magic menus are still present, magic shortcuts for all magic, heavy block, aerial combos, not to mention they've got the Dissidia team on it for cinematic battle effects. FFXV can suck a big one. The KH/Dissidia system FFVIIR currently has is lightyears ahead of it. Even keeps some of the oldschool ATB strategy with options and a similar pace while still being action oriented.
Really hoping this turns out to be true, but Nomura has said he's "just seen" parts of the Scorpion boss battle so that's kind of difficult to see in 2017. If it is, you can expect the first part only goes until the end of Midgar(meaning a 4-5 disc game which would kind of suck). 2018 is my expectation though. KH3 will probably be out late this year and FFVIIR will probably follow up next year.

Materia will work exactly the same. In KH3 they now have pages on the shortcut menu, making it easy to access all spells. I can only imagine FFVIIR will be the same. In KH-BBS they showed that situational spells like mini, frog, and poison actually work better in an ARPG system IMO, still tons of tactic.

You're missing the point, they can change the name for nomenclature reasons. Even if it had to be 4GDS or some crap with phone features, they could own that market as well by offering a dual screen phone version for adults and a non-phone 4DS version for kids. Speaking of exploration open world is different than having an overworld map, which I'm hoping returns for FFVIIR. Too much endless driving, running, etc in FFXV. I love the overworld map's perspective. You can see the curvature of the horizon in the distance and traverse via airship. The sense of scale is amazing. If they put an overworld map in FFVIIR and just make it a little less warped in scale and add a bunch of cool stuff to it, I'm all for it.
Nomura won't get moved off of KH3, he's spearheaded that franchise. However Suzuki is co-directing FFVIIR now, and I have a feeling Tabata will get moved to it as well after FFXV is complete.
They should really hire Sakaguchi back on for FFVIIR though.

Character design wasn't bad to my taste, content was. Although environment design could have skewed a bit more medieval IMO.
