That's correct, it is a modified Quake III engine.
Which says a lot about the capabilities of the engine of the time... but holy crap, these games just look terrible now. It's been half a decade since MW1 and it barely looks any better.

I highly doubt Valve would lend those characters to Microsoft. In the end, Valve is a PC/Mac company and those characters would go to a PC/Mac SSB game, if ever those was one made (not including The Showdown Effect).

Who would win? With casual gamers, I'd expect Brawl as they at least know some of the characters. For core gamers, I'd expect Battle Royale to end up getting more sales due to the fact that there aren't many core gamers who care about their Wiis or the Wii U to get a new SSB game, at least not immediately.
