for UMD transfer program, news report from japan basically showed it failed to entice the japanese market. That is why PSP still thrives there.

Indeed, at that time, the PS3 was quite ahead of its time. It has wifi, bu ray and HDMI 3D support along with advance audio format that the Xbox 360 didn't have. It was a good value for money for $600 but of course, people only see it as a gaming console.

Depends on what features and games you want. Having a ps3 may be incline to buy the vita along with its hardware and cross platform play but the software and price of 3Ds is really attractive.
Finally, sony you have me quite pleased. Hope japanese developers adapt the psv. Tehy need to move on from the psp, I need more jrpg in it.
