The PS3 version of HL has Looooooooooooooooong load times.
I think it is to help eliminate the LOAD times.
If you get a chance do a VS from Orange Box HL games from both and see the PAINFULL difference.

I have over 35 games on another console I own (will not mention any names for fear of fanboy banter). If I had a MANDATORY install, I would now have to start deciding what to start dumping. And God Forbid I wanted to DL's some demos, music or movies.

This would work assuming the following ..
- everyone had a hi-speed broadband connection (better yet, full direct fiber to your house)
- everyone had some sort of HTPC next to their TV set
- all retail stores would be willing to shut down that part of their revenue (and it would close some game shops)
- game devs would be willing to also take a revenue hit since the MEDIA section of retail shops and games shops are now closed.
