Why would you want a FF6 remake over a FF7 one? FF6 should just be ported if anything, like you said. It's fine the way it is. 7 was 3d. It's still similar to games that are out today. Remake 7 and it has a good chance of making the game way better.

It's not that they didn't have the emulation ready years ago. It's just that the PS2 is STILL A MONEY MAKER. It was a business decision, not a technical difficulty. I thought every body and their moms knew this.
I can't wait for this though, I knew this day would come.
