Well, sure it is resources and land. Religion is just a means to drive those problems... an excuse, a way to justify many of the acts men take. I assure you, in the end, we all fight over food, a roof over our heads and the people we feel something for. The fact is, in many areas of the world, the religion has gotten deeply entangled with these conflicts (they have been going on for well over a couple of thousand of years now...) So why you are partally right, the core problem being resources...
It is also naive to believe otherwise. The way the world was shaped, specially in the past, had a LOT to do with religion. Be it used as an excuse to drive armies or to forcedly withdraw funds from people, religion has had a BIG part in social disturbance. Higher circles of religious influence have always been close to the centres of power throught history.
