The Virtual Console is amazing; I just wish that Nintendo were still releasing new old-games for it on a regular basis.

Looking at the company history, the studio has been hemmoraging staff members, quite often of great importance, for well over a decade at this point. This was going on even *before* the Microsoft acquisition.

Really, Rare's been dead a long time; they just didn't know it.

"1.) You can't use last year as an example because there were a lot of games released before 2010's E3."

Um, that's kind of my point. A good year for software has games releasing throughout. A bad year is one whose release calendar features gaps that you could drive a monster truck through, e.g., *this year*.

"The Wii has had years like this before, mind you"

That is objectively untrue. Despite what the d...

"Donkey kong country returns, kirby's epic yarn, golden eye 007. What do these games have in common?"

Well, for one, they were all released in mid-to-late October-November.

I don't mean to be blunt, but if the first *ten* months of the year suck, then the year overall sucks.

It doesn't matter if the completely imaginary games they announce at E3 are all awesome, and it doesn't matter if they hypothetically anno...

"Hardware sales are starting to slide a bit, but other than that there is no reason to even consider it"

I respectfully disagree. 2010 was an amazing year for the system in terms of compelling software, and that was due to heavy first- and third-party support. The latter is going to be essentially-non-existent after this month, and the former is going to be greatly diminished the rest of the year to make way for the 3DS launch.

That doesn't...

"and... i thought wii's last year was 2010."

And in terms of a consistent, comprehensive lineup of software, you were not wrong.

It is always nice to see the time-honored tradition of the rap battle is alive and well. geohot is a hero and a champion.

"He is too cocky"

That is the best part. Anyone can write a topical rhyme -- but only a select few can recite it with the sheer boastful self-confidence that characterizes truly great rap.

"I've never actually seen the Dongle Key btw, so I can't confirm if this is true; I'll have to take your word for it"

Linking to actual instructions on how to use any of the keys is verboten, but here are two articles about the tweet that should corroborate what I'm saying.

Tampering with federal evidence carries much stricter penalties than copyright infringement, which is what geohot is currently on the hook for. Erasing the data would be an exquisitely bad move.

"Like I said, the "Root Key" that Kevin Butler tweeted the other day were FAKE"

It's not fake; it's just the dongle key, not the Root key.

"The real Root Key is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT"

Kevin Butler tweeted one of several keys used in jailbreaking a PS3. I'm not particularly certain why it matters *which* of them it was.

You guys are missing the point, which is that Metacritic is a terrible site, and people who use it in arguments should feel terrible.

The Matthew Crippen modchip suit certainly did. Wonderful case, that one.

"All they really have to do is start releasing specific keys for their games and then what?"

Absolutely nothing unless they revoke the old keys, which is not going to happen.

"So no this means nothing."

Yes, that is why Sony is vigorously trying to sue everyone and their brother over this -- because it means nothing.

"people will continue to find ways to hack and ultimately pirate the games"

Pirates aren't the ones who need to find a new method for anything at the moment. Online hole-plugging like this has literally zero impact on people who keep their systems offline.

The laws on stealing don't apply because nothing was 'stolen' in the first place -- not even Sony is alleging theft at this point.
