In order to benefit from that $50 initial start up member fee, you HAVE to purchase other content. That means by the end of the year, you could have paid 2x as much (possibly more) meaning your $50 initial cost is now $100+ at the end of the year.

The PS2's dominance was because it only had a 90 day warranty and people had to keep replacing their PS2's with new units and has NEVER been changed to this day.
It even got so bad that customers launched a class action lawsuit that Sony paid out.

Don't forget about losing USB ports and the the pressure sensitive on and off switch that was on the PS3 Phat unit and the material used to create the shell. The new UltraSlim PS3 is so cheaply it even has a sliding CD cover made out of siding you would find in cardboard boxes.

It's amazing that the 360 has managed to sell so much in such a shot period and all doing so by keeping the price high with only 2 price cuts while adding new features into each new iteration of the 360 and NOT having to strip feature after feature until you have nothing but a bare bones console finally priced to target the late adopters.
