I played it for far longer than I should have. I just wanted to give it every chance to surprise me but it was all to no avail. It started out badly and headed downhill from there.

VHS was measured in lines. 525 scan-lines in NTSC (486 visible), or 625 lines in PAL (576 visible). That being equivalent to about 320 pixels of horizontal resolution. As the aspect ration is 4:3 the res of standard VHS would be 320x240. 76800 pixels total.
DVD has a stored resolution of 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL). So that's a leap of 450% - 540%. 345600 pixels total (NTSC) 414720 pixels total (PAL)
