I don't think its new game design, people are waiting for its the next gen RPG with a great story like in the past days. Back in the day they had to work harder on the stories, worlds and characters to make up for 2d sprites. Not they seem to work too hard on graphics, gimmicks, or new game design like you said and they loose what makes great JRPGs to begin with.

There are still great, neh, fantastic JRPGs out there. Persona 4 came out in December on the ps2. Valkyria chronicles on the ps3 is a work of art. The DS has seen dragon quest IV, V and the underrated the world ends with you. Disgea 3 was a fun and had all the charm of the previous 2 games and the deepest yet. Ar tonelico 2 came out last month. yeah IMO these games have been rushed to make sure they come out on the 360 first. Look at this and last remnant. It makes no sense to me tough, because then they have a poor product and gets a bad rap then the better ps3 version comes out, but by then people won't care or have moved on or are scared to buy it because of the buggy 360 version. The online on white knight is pretty cool. You create your one character and do side quests in the world established in the main game. Think of it has a neat MMO add on to extend the length of the game.
actually no. Valkyrie chronicles, persona 4, and dragon quest IV all have been fantastic and above expectations. However Next gen Jrpgs have been lacking, hopeing white knight story turns it around, but disegea 3 and Valkyrie chronicles both have been surburb. Too bad Square is rushing poorly developed titles out the door and ruining JRPGS as a whole.

yeah and what angers me the most is how ignorant and stupid these people are when they talk about Japanese games, when in fact they now very little. yeah agree with all above but at the same time we the gamers are partly to blame. Really the fanboys. You have a fan of X console who hates z console who looks at all the reviews and once it sees a low score for an important game on the z console they eat it up and say see I knew that game was overhyped, "epic fail" and crap like that. SO4 is a nice game, but don't be acting like that doesn't have the same battle system its been using for 12 years back when star ocean came at on the psone just with a 3d characters.
