Since it's just 100 more than the PS4 and just 50 more than a comparable X1S it makes sense for everyone who doesn't own a PS4 or next gen console yet, especially if you're also interested in VR.
Even on your 1080p you're going to see a clear difference since the picture will be downsampled.

It's way higher than 1080p. Usually 1440 or 1800p upscaled which is a huge difference.
If it makes the console more accessible because it's cheaper while much more powerful than the competition for only 50 more....it makes perfect sense.
I can even see them releasing a 4KBR capable version later down the line.
