Exactly. I think that was the point of the Origin stories; to give your character some background. I never felt my city elf in DA:O was an "empty shell", because so much of the conversations related back to my origin. I played the entire game in the mindset of being this oppressed race rising to become something more than what was thought possible.

I would say it's the other way around. Their shit looks hot, but doesn't innovate at all. Their mice lack buttons. No special features/functions on their keyboards. They are also the masters of excessive packaging (I work in a PC hardware store).

I also do not have that issue w/ BC2. Play on the PC, and I can see enemy soldiers to the vanishing point (which is to say, I can see them until they are a distance away to appear smaller than I can discern).
I don't get the comparisons to BFBC2. It feels more like MW2 to me, but with a larger, open map. It's buggy as hell (which is probably why they made the beta more available), but to illustrate my previous point:
