All I ever hear is -the game is to short... so somewhere there is a disconnect between what some developers want to believe and what most gamers feel.

Uhm ... Sony's policy would/could not allow them to send a 40gig back to replace a 60gig (I assume euro right) Then warranty states equal or better....The only way that would happen is if your friend said that it would be ok for them to do that.
And if 4months is true - you officially hold the record for the longest service- average wait time is 10days with a possible 30 days max on turn around.
Receipt has to match serial number of PS3 and sales record of store.
Sony has made it clear since -well forever that they require the receipt for any warranty service...
it says so right in their manual that comes with all their products.
Just because some git doesn't understand to keep it they are not responsible for that persons action.
Ebay is not an authorized dealer so you would have no warranty with or without a receipt.
I would not be surprised if Kojima threw in a section you have to play using a mirror to see it correctly....
