Well, it has already survived and grown in a whole year worth of awesome games that I still play sometimes too. But I still come back to Destiny.
Here's hoping the next years of new content and updates for Destiny are as good or better than then ones that have accumulated over this past year. So far, so good.
This fall and winter seasons promise great games (all those gamer1138 mentioned and more) and I do hope they're awesome because I plan on playing them. ...
I started playing since the Beta, but then stopped angry at about a month after the game came out. Picked it up again almost 4 months ago and haven't stopped. The game is only getting better and better. The update fixed many outstanding bugs and also gave new content even to people with plain vanilla Destiny. The new content looks awesome and the one coming on the 15th looks even more so.

Maybe the 2.0 Update coming on September 8th will change your mind. Many changes and enhancements are coming even to vanilla Destiny.

Taken King includes many things but its easy to follow and level up now.
Specially with the 2.0 update coming Sep 8th. (Taken King goes active on the 15th but you can play the game with the updates before that).

Destiny was released LAST year. It has had, and will have, PLENTY of contenders. They just don't stack up.
Its not just marketing, its word of mouth too. The game is good, the community is incredible and the company keeps making things better listening to that community.
It gets better almost twice every month with free updates.
The expansions cost of course, but not in a way that hurts so much as other DLC from other games I've payed for and let me down.
I love other games too (loved Bloodbourne and I'll surely love MGSV) but I always come back to Destiny ...
It's because some older budget-conscious systems were sold with extra little space.
Hopefully the changes to the ghost Bungie mentioned will address the lack of 'explicit' lore in the game.
The story is actually pretty good, awesome really, it just needs to be better expressed in the game.
I for one enjoy it a lot and already pre-ordered Taken King, but its good to know that many things will get better for vanilla players as well.

The added inventory slots will appear even if you only have vanilla Destiny.
The core game has gone through lots of changes even without the DLC. And Taken King will be another one. With lots more to come.

There is nothing 'like' Destiny right now. And the phrase "Play a better game," is just a matter of opinion, not fact.
I like many games, but Destiny is right now definitely my favourite by far.

I'm 850 hours in... Can't get enough. Playing with friends is awesome!! Nothing beats kicking Crota's arse while talking about the latest news, movies, music, girls, etc.
Grinding is harsh sometimes but there are always good (and sometimes awesome) rewards to keep you coming back.

I would like to agree with you, but you're assuming that future will not copy or implement some sort of DLC like Destiny (or who knows? maybe even worse or more expensive).
Whether we like it or not, Destiny is successful in many areas that interest game companies, namely monetary areas.
