We will see on-demand take off. Sure, you cannot do 1080p/24 on demand but even what is available looks pretty good compared to DVDs (which are not terrible when upscaled but you can definitely see the difference).

If I can see most of the movies that are released in HD on demand, I will not be buying very many movies. After all, 5-6 USD versus 25 USD for something I want to watch once? I'll take the 5-6 dollar version 99 percent of the time (about one movie in 20 that I watch...

Another way is that Nintendo is using the ideas first conceived of and disclosed to the world for ill-gotten gain.

It cost a lot of money to make a console but sometimes you have a good idea about how to improve something and you patent it and try to sell it to other companies. MS took a license, Nintendo choose to go to trial.

But it is often common that you inadvertently infringe a patent (which is more likely the case here) - MS and Nintendo certaintly don't ne...

Once you have either the PS3 or the XBOX 360, there is no reason to rush and buy the other console. I have the 360 so I am waiting for the price to drop to $300. Sure there are a few exclusives I'll miss out on/have to wait but there are enough exclusives to keep my busy and multiplatform games are coming out as well. I would pick up the PS3 for a bluray player but I refuse to pay more than about $200 for a player and would prefer one that stacks and automatically works with my universal r...

There is limited demand because a large number of people don't have HDTVs, the cost of a Bluray is at least $400 and movies are 25-30 USD. I personally had problems justifying a DVD at 15 USD for most movies (better off watching on demand or renting). But at 25-30 for a movie I am at most going to watch twice? Tough deal.

I will say however, that I would buy a bluray disk before going to the movies again - family of four is incredibly expensive to go the movies and the exper...

Both MS and Sony are going to spin it in a favorable manner but I much prefer the professional manner these two did it - no slamming the other, just talking up their strengths. And we will have to wait for the full story - will the DLC help MS more or will the fan loyalty help Sony more - time will tell.

But MS/Rockstar/Sony must be enjoying the surge in cash.

The price of the 120 GB HDD is crazy - shouldn't be more than $100 USD - heck you want people to download movies and things - that is how you make money.

Oh well - until the price drops I am sticking with the 20 GB HDD and just not buying as many arcade games.

If you feel my opinion is incorrect (and or biased) please explain. Do you have proof that a core is not often used to decompress data off the DVD? Or do you some reasons for why you feel decompression is not a cpu-intensive process? Because it is.

I don't think you are suggesting that the PS3 is not that close to the XBOX 360 so I am not sure how to response. I will say that the PS3 will still probably have some advantages from a CPU standpoint so that was perhaps too stro...

"• Support for titles to store installation data on Storage Device for faster loading."

Currently it is common to use one of the cores to handle decompression of data (because there is a lot of compression on a DVD). Therefore, by locally saving you can free up the core and this will basically increase the performance of the 360 by 50% - assuming you can program the 360 well enough and your game can handle at least three threads (one per core). If this is true it ba...

I guess you could compare metacritic scores but FPS is a much bigger category than stealth action. MGS is a game designed for a particular group of people. Gears has a wider appeal. So it is to be expected that Gears will outsell MGS, assuming both are great games (which I expect).

Personally I like the over the shoulder FPS look better than the pure FPS look so I would prefer Gears over other pure FPS types. But it is a little early to compare succes just yet - best to w...

Sure, your processor can affect all the things listed but last time I checked you can get a GPU that does encoding for movie playback so it would help there. Still, in the end, unless you game there isn't much reason to get anything more than the cheapest GPU that will help off-load codec playing/creation. And unless you have a HD optical drive you don't even need that.

Sure the gflops of a video card are impressive but keep in mind that graphics are what is considered embarrassingly easy to do in parallel. Try to run looping, branching code on a video card and the performance will suck. Basically, you have to go out an rewrite every single algorithm (and pray that you can actually do things in parallel) in order to get those orders of magnitude in performance improvements.

Having said that, my hope is that Nvidia and/or Intel can get a dece...

Sounds like a stealth-action game (maybe similar to MGS4 although it is far to early to suggest it compares to MGS4). Still, they may have decided the niche was already filled and therefore decided to just bring it to the XBOX 360 for now. I suspect that if it does well there will be a port.

I can rarely find time to play more than one game a month (probably less than that). So for me it is al about selecting the best games so I can maximize the fun.

Once my kids get older we can play together and I will be set.

Banjo-Kazooie looks like a lot of fun - love that new gameplay idea of being able to create your own vehicle. Nice to see Too Human is dropping this fall as well - it is has been a decade in the making. Gear is looking good as well. I guess Alan Wake is going to be a 2009 title - that is fine though because there is plenty this year for me to handle.

Basically, there are more games that look good than I have time to play. If you have both systems I don't know how you choose...

It is the darn DVD drive - way too loud. I think that is probably the biggest reason the XBOX 360 hasn't sold well in Japan (the RROD issues didn't help either). If you live in a small apartment place and your console is making a lot of noise then you might just go crazy. My solution is to use headphones - I can crank the volume without waking up the kids and I don't hear the DVD drive.

Of course, this was an expensive game to make but still - I hate when a game is only 8 hours long. At about 12 hours I feel ok and above 15 hours makes me happy (assuming the game is good).

Sounds you PS3 owners have something to crow about (no action game on the XBOX 360 is that long - at least none that I am aware of). Probably the advantage of having bluray. I am hoping this type of game forces MS to allow developers to load portions of the game on the HDD so we can also ge...

Perhaps with the single chip solution they will integrate the power supply - that would be hot (pun intended).

Is all you need - the reduction to the 65 nm feature size for both the CPU and GPU (along with the reduced heat) will permanently solve heating problems. I am waiting to pick up a second 360 until that happens (I also want a price cut and a quieter DVD drive). The whole bluray drive thing is interesting - would easily make an Elite module truly elite - but I don't see that happening as MS seems more interested in downloading. Still, if a add-on ever comes out I may pick it up as I still ne...

Not much point in have cool parkour moves if you cannot see them being done. The video didn't do much for me but I'll reserve judgment.

There are some better articles out there that include more detail (this is a pretty high level review). And I am not sure Havok can be considered its own engine - I thought it was a plug-in (same with Euphoria).
