The PS3 is a remarkable design and it offers a great value. But as a gaming console it is a poor design. It is difficult to utilize the power and the memory limitations hurt its graphical abilities. Plus it is expensive.

I think the PS3 will ultimately make Blu-ray win so Sony can enjoy that - but I fear that downloading content is going to kill the optical market. I have not purchased or rented a movie for myself since I was able to get on-demand content. The amount of HD...

There is one problem, however, the PS3 and XBOX 360 architecture is not that similar. So unless you use a game engine like Epics (which has its problems) you are almost forced to do a redesign.

On the PS3 you have an advantage in physics-type calculations - so whipping hair around and bouncing cleavage should be done well (XBOX 360 does it okay but the pure number crunching is not there). AI is more of a problem as the Cell is poorly suited to do out-of-order instructions - t...

(from a score perspetive) can be determined based on the related reviews. I personally discount reviews of console specific sites - they at most could only be neutral with respect to other games on the console. Typically they need to support the fanboy idiots with outrageous ratings.

To me it seems like a stretch for a pure online fragging game to get a AAA rating. It may be a blast but AAA games are supposed to be more than that. They are supposed to be transecend prior ...

Over too soon seems to imply less than 8 hours - that just doesn't seem fair for $60. There was a similar issue with Gears but it was so immersive and realistic that after playing the game you almost felt as if you had been in a war (that is far more artistic than most action movies and most of the "modern art" crap to all the idiots that suggest games cannot be considered art). Plus there was an online element (and the hardest difficulty level is tough). If this is true then it ...

Didn't really like it - I guess I am not a fan of JRPGs. But I liked the demo of Eternal Sonata - so maybe it is just that Blue Dragon is not that great. It is okay and if you are a fan of the genre, worth playing, but otherwise not a great example of what is possible (I am probably going to skip it).

My thought is that if the game is great, you grab it. But if the game is decent to good, then it depends if you like the genre. Blue Dragon seems in the decent to good range.

AI requires out-of-order instructions - something the PS3 is weak at. The XBOX 360 is better at out-of-order instructions but neither are great - a dual-core intel chip is far superior in that regard. So it is fairly easy to see how the PS3 could not handle the AI - but would kick but when it comes to physics-like caluculations - something the XBOX 360 is not as strong at.

The biggest problem with the PS3 is that it a poor architecture for gaming. If you could actually use...

The XBOX 360 CPU is superior when it comes to AI, the Cell is superior when it comes to physics. This has been known for a while. The new Splinter Cell seems to place more emphasis on AI - it is part of the game play. Therefore, you cannot do it on either Wii or the PS3. However, throw it on a PC and it would be easy. Just goes to show that MIPS does not give the whole story - anyone who thinks otherwise is just swallowing hype.

The PS3 - from a GPU perspective - is weaker. It is silly to suggest otherwise. It theoretically has more power for certain operations (such as those suitable for physics) but it doesn't help much in gaming software. It is possible to overcome the weakness of the PS3 GPU by utilizing the cell but then you lose elsewhere. Basically, the PS3 architechture is a poor choice for a console - it will always be poor. Sony screwed up. Now Sony is hoping developers can overcome the screw-up and d...

If you want to use your stereo for sound (like many people with home theater systems) then the HDMI is annoying unless you have a receiver that include HDMI input. I haven't upgraded my receiver so I don't care about HDMI right now but a quieter DVD drive would be nice (don't really care about the heat issue either - I have the three year warranty to keep me safe for a while).

Supposedly MS is providing newer, quieter DVD drives (that is the reason for the noise) along with the 65 nm chips but I suspect they are just introducing things as they can support demand so the actual product you have may vary. Once the 65 nm chips are out the rings of death issue goes away and then you are just left with the DVD noise issue - I was going to mod my to compensate but with the extended warranty now I cannot.

If Sony had to destroy all the PS3 then Sony would likely be more interested in paying a higher fee. It will not happen - the company is not in the business of making consoles and the patent is about to expire. Not worth worrying about.

Sony (and MS) are always being sued by inventors. Sometimes the claims hold up and sometimes they don't. But an exclusive licensee can sue.

I personally think Sony is a lot more worried about other lawsuits pending - some of them are being made by folks with serious IP rights that could have a major effect on Sony's ability to produce components and devices (including the PS3). But usually companies pay a fee and go about their merry business. So this will only affect Sony'...

Re 125 You don't even know what you are excited about. That is just plain stupid.

They have a more expensive machine (and always will) and are trying to catch up to the XBOX 360 set of games. Sure, there are lots of games announced but all you have to be excited about is 2008-2009? By then the PS3 should be about $250 and I might consider. But what about 2007? What is there to be excited about? I'd wait for your answer but then I would be doing what you will be doing.

Now I admit I prefer western style RPGs to JRPG but when I played the Blue Dragon demo I was not impressed with anything but the graphics. I suspect there is a lot of depth and some people may enjoy but I didn't like the style of play. It seemed like a decent game for its genre but I am not sure I will ever be excited about JPRG. So I would rate it about a 6-7 out of 10 (mostly for the graphics and the presentation and the music). As many people have commented - the whole genre of turn-ba...

There are a lot of stupid comments on this site - the price drop is going to happen and Sony fans are a little scared.

1) XBOX 360 and the PS3 are approximately equal in power - both can only do 720 with any decent textures. You want higher resolution? By a PC and a couple costly graphics cards. XBOX 360 has superior AI capability, PS3 has superior physics capability (I'd go into more detail but it is pointless here). Basically equal in power. All this talk about the "...

Sure - Sony finally has some games coming out but the XBOX 360 is going to get a price cut (probably $100 across the board) this fall and has a lot more games. Don't be surprised to see FF on the XBOX 360 cause the sales of the PS3 are just too low. Problem is simple - the PS3 is too expensive. That is why the Wii is selling (although I don't understand why - better off with a PS2 IMHO), even though it is way overpriced. Once the 60 g model is gone, back to $599 without backward compatibi...

Totally agree - it is too early to know what the game play will be but I completely agree that the next-gen systems (PS3 and XBOX 360) can simply do things that are not possible on the Wii. The Wii will fade as the number of HDTVs increase and Sony and MS are going to have a real fight as to who is first. I still think the XBOX 360 is a better value for gamers and I think it will win this generation but plainly you can do great looking games on the PS3 and it may end up being very close. I...

Sure - the PS3 is flexible in that regard. But it doesn't matter - the CPU and GPU of the PS3 cannot match top of the line GPUs in the PC - bandwidth just isn't there. Not even close.

I am a huge fan of consoles and think they will mostly replace PC's in the next 5-7 years but reality is reality.

And your BS in engineering is appreciated but does not impress - I have one and have thoroughly studied the topic - I am trying to figure out if the next round of co...
