No one has ever said the PS3 isn't powerful. What a lot of people have said is that it is a terrible architecture. The fill rate is slower because of the weaker GPU and to make up for it you have to do a bunch of tricks that are likely to never completely make up for the lack of resources. The unbalanced design means that tricks to make the PS3 fly will be of little help in the typical balanced two, three or more core porcessor world.

So this guy basically agrees with Gabe t...

Cannot be done - missing a chip. About all that could be done is do it by software but given the problems with developing on the PS3, I think Sony is better off focusing on giving developers better tools. MS is now making a profit - although who knows if it is just the Halo affect - but MS seems to have the ability to further drop the price. I would be worried if I was Sony - the cell and Bluray just cannot drop in price fast enough.

I predict that Sony is not going to make ...

First, from a visual standpoint there is no difference between a 40 1080p and a 40 inch 720p TV set unless you really have a small living room and sit about 5-7 feet away. So concerns about 1080p being the true standard are somewhat irrelevant. That is why I went 720p with my 50 inch plasma - I sit about 10-12 feet away and at that distance I cannot see a difference between 1080 and 720 (and I have better than 20/20). A 60 inch set would show the difference but then it would absolutely loo...

But then Sony's quality went south and now I would never buy sony electronics for receivers or MP3 players (talk about the suck - Sony has lost its way because of its concern about protecting its studios). The TV's are fine but I don't like the LCD picture from off angles (plasma owns LCDs in that regard) so really there is nothing that Sony makes that I want.

I don't think space is an issue but even it was I would blame MS for trying to avoid making the HDD mandatory - that is the problem.

MS - time to let the developers go and push the boundaries of the XBOX 360 - let them make regular games were the HDD is mandatory - it is not like many gamers don't have the HDD anyway.

I would disagree with your assessment of Halo 3 but maybe you are a much better player than I - I found Heroic to relatively challenging and was no where close to beating Halo 3 in 6 hours - I suspect it is going to be more like 15-20 hours. But then I don't get to play much and kinda suck I guess.

Still - back on topic - I am mostly interested in single player games so a short single-player campaign is a non-starter.

Graphics looked pretty cool - explosions were a little weak but not bad. But I don't understand how it could be set so easy - in most games sitting around like that would get you killed. Seems like getting shot had no effect on health. But I suspect balancing issues are being resolved and I like to see a change of pace in a game - keeps things interesting. Hard to tell much from such a short section but this better be good though - the PS3 needs some good games.

Now that it is fairly plain that the format war is going to go for several years I am about ready to pick up a cheap Wal-mart special for $200 HD DVD player (assuming it works half-way decently). I was going to wait another year and see how the whole format war shakes out but now I can buy the HD DVD player and feel relatively safe that the investment will be fine for several years at least.

Nice - time to grab some HD DVD titles.

The big assumption is that developers can figure out a way to use most of the performance capabilities of the PS3 in a game environment. I am not convinced it is possible and I think much of the processing power of the PS3 will always go unused. And this ignores, at least somewhat, the increase in graphical capabilities that future consoles will bring (and I don't think the XBOX 720 will drop until 2011 but that is a different story).

So interesting but not particularly persu...

Sure Gabe has a history of speaking his mind - but he is a developer - you know, one of those people you want developing games for you. The Orange box is a AAA title - so he obviously knows his stuff.

His complaint cannot be equated with the general complaint about multicore processors - all developers hate that because it add a lot of work. His complaints all seem pretty valid though, WTF did MS provide a next-gen XBOX 360 without a HDD when the last-gen one had it? That ad...

Gaming... you hit the nail on the head - bubble for you.

What I don't like is that Sony basically lied about this. First Sony said BC is an important differentiator - that is why you should buy our system instead of the MS system - because we believe in and provide BC. Then Sony downgrades and then cuts it out. Sure, you can buy the more expensive system but this move basically says that we no longer care about our prior users - at least not at a price point that they most l...

That is fair use - Sony just wants to change the rules. Not feeling so supportive of Sony all of a sudden.

There is a lot of talk about how the XBOX 360 is a FPS system but when I look at all the good games coming up (and already out) I see some good RPGs. I hop over to the PS3 list and I don't see anything good that isn't already on the XBOX 360 except for shooter type games.

Oh yeah - there are more good games than I will ever have time to play or buy. Have to plan my purchases carefully - right now Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed are two must buys.

For games with a lot of cut scenes it may be that you need more space - but I think procedural generation and compression can get most games to fit on a single DVD. What MS needs to do is allow the HDD to be mandatory for all games so a cache similar to what is used in PCs is available to reduce the storage issues and improve the speed.

By the way - to say you cannot do a game on XBOX 360 is silly - you would just have to ship with multiple discs. So this statement isn't very...

It seems like everything said by Sony is contradicted the next day.

If there is only the 40 gig SKU I think Sony is making a huge mistake. BC is generally a minor issue but without it there is no particular reason for existing PS2 owners to buy a PS3 over a XBOX 360 if you are looking at games - because the XBOX 360 will have a better library of games (at least for a while longer). Sony better hope people are sheep because without brand loyalty.... I personally have nevered ...

Sure - there is the basic issue that hardware doesn't magically get cheaper by itself. So Sony would probably have trouble launching at $399 - but some of the things would have gotten cheaper (bluray - HDD - cell) so the cost would have been lower. And the PS2 is still doing great so there would have been little reason to push to the next generation quite yet. Plus the GPU could have been tweaked a little so Sony had an advantage rather than a disadvantage. The idea being that the develop...

I don't know what I hate more - the fact that every XBOX 360 SKU does not come with a HDD or the fact that MS charges $100 for a 20 gig HDD.

It is time to drop the Core so the HDD can be required for games - then we can have great performance and the DVD drive will not be the limiting factor on loading data.

On average there isn't much difference between the PS3 and XBOX 360. So it is all about the games.

And looking at what is coming - there is no way anyone could play them all. I did a quick check - there are about 150 cross-platform games coming in the next two years (per IGN). Sony has about 65 exclusives and MS has about 93 exclusives (the list is larger but puzzle games do not count).

The exclusive titles - assuming they stay exclusive - look great for both ...

6685d ago 2 agree2 disagreeView comment

Stop being silly. If you want to compare AAA games that are console exclusive I think there are none on the PS3. Pure games - the XBOX 360 has a ton more, an a far more complete library (it should as it has been out almost two years).

In fact, if you look at the current line up, there is almost no reason to buy a PS3. If you include future line-ups then you may have something, but who knows about future games - sometimes they look great and then turn out to be so-so.
