Considering that this is unprecedented, it's not all too crazy to think some people are skeptical.

It's pretty typical.
The developers have to work from scratch under pretty strict deadlines. They also need to do what they're told, not what they want to do.
Modders do it because they want to do it, and don't need to worry about getting their ideas green lit by their supervisors and all that jazz.

As a video game, Mass Effect 1 was much better than Mass Effect 2. It involved more complex game play decisions than what difficulty to play it at.

Some should be simple and fun, others should be complicated and challenging. If everybody could get every platinum and have nothing but fun on the way, then that would be a bad thing, in my opinion.
Go look them up yourself. They've been around for years, so you (a presumed fan) should know good and well what they are.
