PS3 games tend to sell modest over a period of time, with decent numbers on day 1. Games on 350 are different due to its demographic, which look forward to a game's release almost immediately, and so the game's sales eventually fizzle out a little faster.
I'm sure the 250GB PS3 will help in profitability.
The Xbox brand is indeed strong on its home territory, but its influence elsewhere is a different story. For you brand to be a "force to be reckoned with", it has to have a strong influence in, both, its home territory, and overseas. This is something Nintendo and Sony both share.
The fact that the 360 was only able to edge out the PS3 slim by around 100,000 units is a fact in itself. It took so much effort this time around, compared to last year, to even pull off this feat.
In other words, its getting harder to defeat the PS3.

Wow, I'm quite impressed that the 360 was able to outsell the PS3 in spite of all the bundles that were released this holiday. I'm also impressed with how Sony wasn't too far behind, and Nintendo's performance overall, but what impresses me more is the performance of the PlayStation 2. Even after over 9 years, the PS2 continues to hold value during the Christmas season, and holds its own with its younger peers.
