Its all in the timing and Nintendo had it right in 2004. Sony, at the time, made their handheld with the presumption that their opponent would be either the GBA or its successor, however Nintendo had other plans. It decided to surprise everybody at the next E3(as well as Sony) not to mention a better price point and date set.

Playstation2 generation-Analog becomes standard, Dreamcast revolutionizes with online play, Xbox revolution...
yeah, those are innovations in their own little way, but they all pail in comparison to Nintendo's innovations such as popularizing the analog stick, the D-pad, and, of course the wiimote, just to name a few.
Multipayer, voice chat and text messaging dont really count as true innovations. Yes, they did make online gaming better, but cant be considered revolutionary.
The irony the irony. In spite of M$ being this multi-million dollar company, with all this money and power, cant even win a console war. I am indeed; however, interested in Microsoft's entry into the portable market(as everyone is). There resources are plenty and could easily go the route of the PSP in terms of a multimedia device, being the american equivilant of playstation that they are.
Of course, there's the hardware failures to consider..

There are many good reasons to buy a PSP or a DS. If you're like me, I simply can't pick one from the other, so I own both(swapping back and forth depending on the mood).
In the end though, there is no real right answer to which is better. If you are the kind of guy who likes quick on-the-go play with simple, untraditional controls, then say hello to Nintendo DS. Its the guys who make the games. Yeah, I know. There is No More Heroes, Boom Blox, and the like, but if these game designers were to step up then the Wii would be the awesome console that it says it is. It seems everyone is quick to say that the Wii is not revolutionary in its remote control,but it is.
